Hello from San diego, soon to be Boston

Hi everyone,

i live in San Diego CA right now but i will be moving to Boston in January for grad school. Currently ride a 2005 CBR600RR and been riding since i was 17. have had a 02 SV650s, Buell XB9R and my current CBR. going to be looking for a bike when i get out there, so if anyone sees a good deal on a decent sv650, sv1000, TLS/R, Z1000, or speed tripple let me know. would also consider any supersport and maybe an older liter, ie 954. only really interested in a naked 650. looking to spend no more than 3k and dont really care if its been down as long as everything is straight. hope to see some of you guys on the track!!!

quick question though. why does it seem like every bike on craigslist is either chromed, stretched, LED lighted, pile of crap or all of the above? do people who take good care of their bikes not sell them this time of year?

I made the move from OC to Boston almost 3 years ago. Above advice is good... the roads here suck in comparison and the riding is rediculously inconsistent. Enjoy it while you can. Any chance you can leave the CBR in cali for when you go back home to visit? My brother has his GSXR750 there so I can ride when I'm home.

There are plenty of used bikes to buy here, but you'll have better luck with the dealerships or on these forums, not craigslist in my opinion. People on the forums tend to take better care of their bikes.

Yes. And your traffic makes ours look like a walk in the park, especially outside the city. Not to mention, since we are seasonal (other than a few diehards), there is a lot of disdain for motorcycles having any benefit in traffic. Where are you going to grad school (yeah, yeah, Boston....) and what for?

I wouldn't say the traffic is worse here... just worse drivers who don't check blind spots, don't use signals, don't give a $hit, etc. I've honked to let someone know they were moving into my lane right next to me and they just kept on coming over and yelled out the window at me that I was in the wrong somehow. There is a reason the term Masshole exists when it comes to driving.

To the OP: Splitting is actually ONLY legal in California, so it is illegal here. Having said that, since I have been doing it for years in Cali before moving, I still do it occassionally here too. Careful though, the lanes are not as wide here and the drivers will NOT give you extra room if they see you. So you need to weigh the risks more carefully which is why I don't do it nearly as often as I would have back in Cali.

I've lane split here. Not sure how bad the ramifications would be but I only do it when traffic is literally parked on a highway transition ramp (whatever they're called)...say 90 to 495. It's wide enough to get a bike through the middle but there's no shoulder. Once traffic starts moving at all, I get back in line ASAP as people will pull infront of you to block your progress...or do something stupid like try to merge without taking the time to see who's around them.

I used to live in Boston and just moved to OC, and IMHO driver's are bad everywhere in concentrated/city areas. CA and MA both have their fair share...if anything, you need to be more vigilant in CA because you get used to the game of roulette while "lane sharing"

traffic within boston is bad, but surprisingly LA is worse!

Welcome. I moved to NH from San Diego recently. I love it here. But the others are right; I miss lanesplitting, and it isn't advisable here.

People who care about their bikes, if they have one to sell, are more likely not to sell it now, but to wait for spring, when the riding season starts and they can get a better price for it. Buying now will save you money, but the selection is smaller.

To reiterate what everyone else has said, yea... its pretty bad for all the reasons mentioned before. I never split on the highway (except to jump off the highway) and locally I pick my spots...

How bad are cagers? Ive had people straight up bump/hit/push me with their cars because they didnt appreciate the fact that I bypassed traffic to get infront of everyone, squeeze the lane so i couldnt pass, and open doors... Yea they suck here

Going to BU at their medical campus to study Healthcare Emergency Management.

I have been traveling for work for a few years. I spent much of 2010 in Cleveland, then a few months in Los Angeles, then about a year here in NH myself before moving everyone and everything else out here. I don't think the time in Ohio made any difference. The transition has been pretty easy, actually. Most people here know how to deal with the weather and such, and will help if asked. My wife and I are much happier with being here than back in CA.

Having a road bike is good here. In Boston, the main advantage will be parking. Downtown, parking your car costs $25 or more; finding cheap or free spots for a bike is much easier. There is clearly a riding season; how long that is depends on your fortitude and intent. I recommend heated gloves. ;D

There is a lot of beautiful countryside up here, well worth exploring on two wheels.

Welcome to NESR. Don't let everyone get you down. There are plenty of nice rides in the Boston area. And getting around the city is easier or a bike. I have a sv650 among other bikes and I find myself ridin that the most on the streets and track. NHMS is a little slice of heaven and there are a few other tracks in the area schedualed to be ready for the 2013 season. Have you ever considered a motard? They are easy to get around in the city, cofortable, fun as hell, and do well at the track.

Most riders of bikes like that have already put them away for the season. You'll only see listings if they have to sell. They use road salt after snow storms here which most Japanese bikes don't stand up to well, and it's already snowed at least once throughout the region.

thanks, and yea i have considered supermotos, would love one but from what i have seen they are out of my price range, or at least the ones i want are. plus as far as track goes, i would rather just be on a normal sportbike. glad to hear about more tracks coming soon, i have only done two track days but hoping to grow that number quickly.
