Android apps?

So I picked up my first new phone in 3 years. I got rid of my ratty looking BlackBerry Curve for a shiny HTC Inspire. So far I've downloded Angry birds, Zedge (wallpaper and ringtones), and the weather channel.

Anybody know any useful or cool apps?

You really shouldn't use a task killer. Android 2.2 will manage your apps. Your wasting more battery by opeing your task killer, closing the programs only to have the OS open them again so they can be managed.

I only use it when an app that I am trying out locks and I want to selectively kill it.

Install the Amazon App Store and visit on a daily basis. Each day they give away a paid app for free (A different one each day).

That's good to know about the app killer. I'd uninstall it, but the phone is being replaced today. Sat night I couldn't get mms so I did a restart. It starting re-sending ALL my old TM's. Pulled the battery twice and it still did it. Lets try a new one.

I guess it depends on the phone.
I have an EVO and use atk all the time. I have it set to kill everything when the screen turns off. You can select ignore on apps that restart after you kill them so they don't get killed and therefore won't waste your battery like you claim. I'm also unsure of what you mean by wasting battery by opening the atk to kill stuff. I touch one button...done.

A lot of people claim that apps left in memory will drain the battery.
This is not the case.
Apps are not "open" and using power just because they are loaded in memory. Using a task killer actually uses more power than just leaving the saved state of the app in memory.

I can find a very good video that explains how Android actually works with multiple apps if you would like.

Wrong, you have 23 apps that are being managed by Android. It manages and allocates resources between apps that you are actively running and apps that are in the background. It is likely keeping a large number of those apps in an idle state. When you kill them, those apps will more often than not restart themselves, which then puts them into an active state, which Android now has to dedicate resources to before it can put it in an idle state. The only use for an app killer on Android 2.2 and higher is to kill an unresponsive app, which can actually be accomplished through android itself. If you want to waste your time trying it, go for it. But don't expect it to do much.
