CNN's Anthony Bourdain dead at 61 - CNN
I've really enjoyed watching Bourdain for years, he did such an excellent job telling the story of how culture and cuisine are married.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
Yeah, he was one of those unique people that added a lot of color to the world. Really sad day.
I hate summers man, last year we lost Chris Cornell & Chester and now Anthony B. He was so candid about his struggles, true philosopher , guy had such a magnetic personality. I have heard he practiced jiuJitsu everyday.
Dude was cool, I remember an episode where he killed a goat they were going to turn into a meal by kneeling on its throat....sketchy but real.
First Kate Spade, now Anthony Bourdain. Bad week for notable people ending it. His shows always incited some hunger and wanderlust.

I thought the media had some some of mandate, whether it be internal or governmental that, in short, said they weren’t supposed to talk about suicides. That said, there’s been quite a bit of chatter about it between two very recent celebrity deaths.
Both recent losses are impactful. And tragic.
Likewise, I’d like to see some similar mandate that prohibits glorification/identification of mass shooters.

I just saw this on the twitters:
Anthony Bourdain had one of the only shows on tv that tried with all its might to teach Americans not to be scared of other people.

cheers, Tony. How do you keep your edge?
By not giving a fuck. Calculation leads to compromise and badness. I just don’t care. I do my best. I do work that interests me that I will hopefully not feel ashamed of the next day. I like things to be strange and beautiful and, if and when possible, not done before. I’d rather fail gloriously and foolishly than turn in efficient and adequate work again and again. That’s just the way I am.

I thought that was more the family and/or out of some assumed 'respect' for the family. Which really seems more like shame associated with the act. Kinda like not talking about premarital children or drug overdoses. I'm glad we're getting away from that, but I can see Chipper's motivations. Especially with shooters. With suicides, I feel like it's probably better to acknowledge it's existence.

This will be unpopular but
I am sorry that these people make this decision. Obviously it is wrong or bad, with the exception of the terminally ill.
The media now has a field day eulogizing the person, WITH ZERO WTF
Please if you ever feel so , sad, desperate, discouraged that the thought of offing yourself come forward.
Basically you need help,, It will be messy but go to the ER and tell them that you are going to kill yourself
There is help, and tomorrow is another day with infinite possibilities.

Echoing above... Fuck this guy and everyone else that takes their own life.
I burried my sister-in-law yesterday. She took her life. And in doing so absolutely DESTROYED everyone who loved her, including my daughter. I sat at the funeral just getting more and more angry with her. She took her life and left a giant wake of destruction behind.

It's almost as if theres something else going on preventing them from making that rational connection.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
Obviously they are crazy, incapable of rational thought
I get a hint that it is fun to think of all the adoration they will get
Its in the same vain I had the thought that the crazy teenager mass murders are getting PRE revenge for all the
girls and successful boys that will spurn him in the future

And now you’ve gone complete wingnut.
On the other side of my original coin, perhaps more awareness will bring more advocacy, especially in the wake of a few high profile deaths. I feel like that is pretty wishful thinking at this moment.
Noel, I’m sorry to hear about your fam. I feel like your reaction is perfectly rational at this point. I also feel like it’s deeper than a simple, purely selfish act. It’s messy, no matter what the wake looks like. Again, sorry man.
My impression is that with two celebrity self-offs in a week, there had been more discussion of getting help. I did see after AB's deed more posting of hotline phone numbers and good discussion.
Sad, but we largely ignore the 22 veterans per day who arrive at the "permanent solution to temporary problems." Been there, lost my youngest brother to it in '02.

Depression can really play a number on your brain. Many of these people "self-medicate" with alcohol or drugs which only exacerbate the problem. I agree with SprintPoser though, a lot of people go unnoticed in this plight, many ex-military going untreated for mental ailments that they contracted from an outside source. Many others are first responders who have a hard time dealing with the day to day encounters. Mental illness is something this country needs to start taking more seriously.
