Trying to get my brother in laws snow blower started...it’s an Ariens Deluxe 28 model 921037 with an AX 414 engine...from what I understand it’s been sitting for about 3 years...It had a full tank of fuel so I drained it through the carb bowl to verify I had steady fuel flow...then I put fresh fuel in with seafoam...there is no fuel filter other than the screen in the tank opening...then I pulled the spark plug and cleaned it and reattached the wire and grounded the end of the plug against the engine and pulled the cord to verify I had spark...then I pulled the carb off and ultrasonic cleaned it...reassembled everything and tried to start it with the electric start and the gas cap loose in case it was a vacuum issue and it was backfiring but will not start...any ideas?...thanks in advance

What did you put in the ultrasonic cleaner to use as a cleaner?

Mine will flood with the choke and then puke fuel from the muffler if I keep cranking it. I'd pull the plug and see if it's wet. Maybe drop a half teaspoon of marvel mystery oil down into the cylinder while the plug is out.
What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.
I cheat and use the electric starter, spins much faster.
Those new carbs all seem to have plastic seats now and haven’t had much luck without replacement.

Ether- starting fluid
There is always the voodoo that the flywheel has sheared its key and is rotated away from proper timing
Plug should be swapped as there is MUCH higher resistance when under compression compared to air then it carbon tracks meaning there
is no spark in the engine
At least turn it over with thumb over spark plug hole to check for compression
Kick it a few times to let it know who's boss

My go-to move is to pull the plug, pour some fuel down it, then start it. It can conform if it will run or not, possibly determine if you have a fueling issue, and many times it simply gets the fuel flowing and clears out any air bubbles in the fuel lines.
Its a dirty carb.
confirm it has spark by pulling the plug, leaving it attached to the coil, holding the electrode near the block and pull the starter. If you see a flash, you have spark. Once this is done....
go clean the carb properly

So I started to follow the TSB and decided to swap the spark plug from my platinum 30 sho (same engine) and give it a try and it fired right up...now it will start and run but the engine surges and backfires and it dies after a few minutes when the choke is off

That still sounds like a fuel issue from a carb that isn't completely clean.

my aunt just gave me a 2 year old lawnmower. it would fire then die instantly. THAT EASY. I've got spark. ITS FUEL. Tore the carb apart made sure the carb cleaner would flow thru all the ports and shot compressed air thru everything. I bolted everything up and 2nd pull it ran like champ.

How much more evidence and statements will it take to start working on the carb? Trust me, I hate them too.

Without digging through manuals to find the exact part number, I had no luck finding the appropriate carburetor on eBay with the less than the 30 seconds I allocated to it. But yes, cheap carburetors are a thing.

Read the first post...I already pulled the carb and ultrasonic cleaned it...looked very clean to before I cleaned it...probably pull it again and do a total disassembly/cleaning but I doubt I’ll find any issues...only thing I can think of is bad rubbers letting in air causing a lean condition although I don’t see any fuel leaking...I’d rebuild before buying a new one...it’s metal and very clean so I can’t see wasting money on a brand new one...plus a new one is over $100...rebuild kit is $25
