I have to call the cable company right to get a new mac addy?

Nopers, thats not how MAC addresses work. A MAC is assigned to a piece of equipment from the factory and is never changed. It's sorta like a modem's social security number.

...The modem has one as well, and if you have a router that does too. Anything with an ethernet/cable port has one.

you just have to let them know what the MAC addy is of the modem (=

I think sax's is right though...they want the new address...
You probably have to let them know you got a new modem and they will walk you through what you need to do. If you have a router, the only MAC they see is the routers. If you don't, then they see all of the computers MACs

Ok how about a new modem and a new router do the need both?
I plan on buying a new modem from there going to my new linksys wireless g router and then coming out of that router I have a existing router that has all my ip cameras on it.
The only reason I dont put all of the ip cameras on the new linksys router is beacuse I'm to lazy to do all the installs all over again will this work?

The only MAC addy your cable company needs is your cable modem. If you use theirs the tech will do that shit, if it's yours, you have to call.
They dont' need the mac daddy addy for any of your routers, NICs, etc...
As for your modem to router to router setup, give it a shot. They sell routers so dumbed down these days, they're glorified hubs at this point. I have an inkling that you'll need a crossover cable to link the two routers, but I've only connected two routers back when I was doing Cisco shit in college. These consumer wireless routers might not have that issue.
Right the only thing they need is the Cable Modems info. Is your current modem dead? If what you have now works except for the modem, then dont fuck with it, just get the new modem and go!Originally posted by Sidewinder

Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
You should be able to connect your old router to your new router without any issues.
I have a couple of routers connected to each other at home.

Well. My old router like i said has all the old ip cameras on it. But I have a couple of computers with linksys speed boosters wireless network cards already installed in them that are a bit out of range of the current router/modem i have so I wanted to get a router that had speed boost to help with speed range.
haha I knew someone would mention Mac Daddy!
