    Re: Career After The Army

Most things I agree with and can take for my own situation have already been said so I'll try not to repeat to much. As Doc said before why not go AGR or Reservse/ National Guard if your not one already. If not more than likely you can reclass to a new MOS when you cross over. Its what I plain on doing when I get back in Septemberish. That way you keep the military you love so much get the 20 year benefits as well as school and a part time job doing whatever. I know it sounds like a lot but it might keep you in a comfort zone as you unwind and find your place. We're both young and as long as we make it back in one piece *knock on wood* theres nothing but time in the world. Just my 2 cents anyway.

Right now I'm an 88N Transportation Management Coordinator kinda boring if only doing one specific part but the grand scale of Military logistics is crazy. I'm hoping to reclass as a 68W Medic and follow up, again hopefully, to 68P Radiological Specialist. I want to help get myself a foot in the door for EMT/ Paramedic and eventually Firefighter then work at a hospital part time. I had the opportunity to go to the medical field right as I joined but decided to follow my then frind and neighbor.

Hey, you're both in Iraq!! You should meet for drinks. Park the humvees outside the nearest taverna and bench race for a couple of hours.

Hey Spence, never met you and I have never been in the service. But seems like alot of good advice here. Take things easy for a while, settle back into "normal" life and go from there.
Looking forward to sitting down and having a frosty beverage with ya in the near future.

I'm from Billerica and I drill out of Londonderry, NH at the end of the Manchester Airport. If all goes accordingly I should be home Septemberish definatly on Fort Couch by All Hollows Eve. But should be on leave sometime during the summer and debating on if I should get a cheap, ie decent bike to learn on then for the 2 weeks and the fall when I get home for good or just wait till the fall and see if I can't get some deals on them. How about yourself?

I was ganna try for June or early July so well see what happens. No I haven't and I was thinking of taking the MSF but was hoping the military would pay for it by doing it at Hanscom, that plus my permit gets me a license without having to take the test at the RMV, but with all the money I'm going to have a couple hundred for course wouldn't be bad at all. I don't know if the MSF works the same way on the civilian side as a alternative to the RMV plus the discount in insuarnce is a plus.

I'd love to but I think I'll stuck with a used something or other still don't know what I'm looking for leaning towards a honda or suzuki as I hear they're pretty comfortable and that would be the first thing I look for cuz I wouldn't want to ride something thats ganna make my ass go numb or arms tired after an hour or two. Unless I hook up with some kinky chick when I get back.

No money in bikes. I know a lot more poor techs, and no rich ones. Very tough business right now.

    we're still looking for ideas....!!!

great thread...cept for that pointless sidetrack...

    great advice too...

    I certainly agree with:

    • take your time
    • got to college
    • and don't take the bait...!!!

Good luck and looking forward to riding with you sometime...!

when i got out of the military (aircaft/bomb tech) i went to work at a local bike shop. the pay was horrid, so were the benifits and after dealing with bikes all week sometimes i just couldn't find the motivation to do my own wrenching on the weekends.

so off i went to trade school

...now i'm a yatch mechanic...slightly better pay than a bike or car mechanic. plus i get to work on high tech racing sail boats and do so much more than a bike tech ever would. diesels, gas motors, 2-strokes, electronics, building shit with composits.

it actually took me a good year of bouncing around doing part time jobs and demilitarizing before i figured out what i was going to do.

thats the best advice i can give right there. take some time to readjust to the civilian world before making any big decisions. you'd be surprised how tweaked out you'll be for the first few months back in reality. if you don't choke some dumb ass lazy civilian in the first month it'll be a small mirical...you'll see...lol

You want FBI? Get a degree in accounting and use your vet status. If you get 30% or more disability you're golden. I just finished my Acc. degree and applied at the IRS, Boarder and Customs and DCA. I got in with all of them.

My other advice is join the Disabled American Veterans. They'll go through you med records and get you the highest rate possible if you have any medical problems what so ever. Talk to Don Horton in the Boston office if you decide to. He's the man.

    Re: Career After The Army

I am conservative as well in life.

If your willing to work your ass off and military will pay then

    Doctor

But a more practical approach is a

    Physician Assistant... look it up

If you got good hands and grades you can hook up with a surgeon work short hours and get over 100K.

Once Obamacare is in; medicine will not be the path to riches but I am sure it will be a very good life.

The last thing is if you have no scruples can lie to everyone in your life with no guilt then there is law or finance or politics or sales .... Lying will be the only skill recognized in the USA future.
