Smile Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

The top ten cars "sold" (not traded in) during the program so far.

    1: Ford Focus

    2: Toyota Corolla

    3: Honda Civic

    4: Toyota Prius

    5: Toyota Camry

    6: Ford Escape

    7: Hyundai Elantra

    8: Dodge Caliber

    9: Honda Fit

    10: Chevrolet Cobalt

It is a flawed program but shows that most of us love a deal even if it's from our own pockets..more or less.

I've thought about it, but going to go used when I car shop this month.

No, those cars are the ones people are buying with the money they got for their clunkers.

Re: Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

I traded in my 08 Corolla and my 99 Ranger for a 2010 Corolla...I REALLY want my 08 Corolla back.

I should've taken a longer test drive; the current generation Corollas handle like shit on the highway. Toyota's electric power steering is not my cup of tea.

    Anyone want a deal on a 2 week old 2010 Corolla S?

I was really close to pulling the trigger on a Cobalt SS sedan, and in hindsight, I wish I had.

I hoped that it wouldn't pass but once it did, I figured I might as well take it before someone else did...I was gonna pay for it in taxes rather I junked my truck or someone else junked theirs.

    Correct.

While it does get cars off the dealer's lots the money being used comes from the government take on tax revenue.

Uncle Sam is paying the dealers to give you a deal on a replacement car while they help some of them stay alive with money they gave them a few months back.

What is this costing us again?

Re: Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

Yeah, it's also a huge waste of resources, since a lot of the cars being traded in aren't clunkers (many are just a few years old) and could easily be sold to and used by someone else for many miles, except for the fact that the program requires that they be destroyed. Which is a bunch of bullshit shoved through by the every powerful automaker's lobby.

I have a friend with a Cobalt SS. Not sure the year... 08 maybe? Awesome car. Not a rocket, but it gets out of it's own way. The fun is in the handling... and it's a LOT of fun. As in "I'd lose my license in no time" fun.

    "Top clunker? The Ford Explorer

As Congress works to replenish the 'cash for clunkers' coffers, details on what drivers are trading -- and buying -- are emerging.
By MSN Money staff and wire reports

If you were wondering what America was going to do with all those Ford Explorers, wonder no longer. We're euthanizing them by the tens of thousands.

Of the top 10 vehicles traded in since the "cash for clunkers" program went live in late July, six are different model years of the once-ubiquitous Explorer, according to data collected by the Department of Transportation and reported by the Jalopnik automotive blog. Lumped together by nameplate rather than model years, its death-row companions include the big Ford F-150 and Chevrolet C1500 pickups, the Chevrolet Blazer SUV, the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, plus the Dodge Caravan and Ford Windstar minivans.

The Explorer was for several years the nation's best-selling passenger vehicle, with more than 400,000 a year leaving showrooms in the late 1990s. The most-popular versions got around 15 miles per gallon. ... "

Ya i was skeptical of the program but it seems to be working.

if i could afford a new car i would have taken advantage but that cash wasnt there

I think it will help in the long run. its rebooting the economy and also people will be using a LOT less gas. i think something like 250,000 cars have been clunk. if th new vehicle get 4 more MPG and that person only uses 1 gallon a day that's saving around 25,000 gallons of Gas a DAY. and all of my estimates are low balls

Re: Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

They are fixated on the cash for clunkers crap. When I explored the option of getting a new car 2 weeks ago they kept coming back to the fact i could get 4500 for my truck with the program. Too bad its worth 8K kbb trade in value. they agreed but went right back to I need to take advantage of the 4500 deal before the program terminates.

    I gave up and left.

Re: Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

I was tempted (even have an Exploder). Then I started doing the math, and got pissed off in the dealership. And the last nail in the coffin - I am scraping pennies together, and returning the bottles - it looks like I'll be sending in the last payment for my BMW. 18 months early!!!! No more car payments!!!! I even inherited use of a new winter beater - an 05 Hyundai Accent. It's ugly as sin, but hell, it's FREE...

Re: Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

I was wise with my purchases of cars and already own efficient vehicles.

That means I get no benefit from this program.

BTW, I hear ya on the steering issue for the new Corolla's. My only complaint on them was that, but it's a big one. I hear airing down to the correct PSI in the tires helps and some people have thrown some rheostats in to make them less sensitive.

I've read about the pots as well; someone on Toyotanation linked to a writeup. I may try the air pressure adjustment, but I don't see it making much difference. Some people say "what steering problem" and others, like me, say "if they would just fix the steering..."

My daily driver has been either a Tacoma or a Corolla since 96 and this car has REALLY soured my opinion of Toyota after 13+ years as a loyal customer. I don't think I'll have this car more than a few weeks.

Re: Cash 4 Clunkers. Who is moving metal?

I wonder how many people took out loans they can't afford to buy a new vehicle?
The problem is, anyone in the market for a car that qualified for the program has probably bought by now, so what are the car dealers going to do for the next few months? go back to twddling their thumbs? Anyone who didn't qualify is probably going to buy used or wait until things pick up. This was deinately a short term fix used as a get me through for car dealers, next they will be offering rebate on windows and roofs etc to keep contractors going and promoting it as enviromental conservation. They should just give us all a few thousand dollars in the form of a pre paid visa card, now that would spark the economy!!!
