The city needs it.
they are proposing one in Marlborough too...if it is all done right, city, state take, jobs etc, environment etc,etc its a win/win
but what i look at is Atlantic City, tis all rundown and the surrounding neighborhood is ghetto...they did not play/plan that right.

This debate raged in my college town (Bethlehem, PA, a total mess of a former steel town) of whether or not to build a casino. They were worried about it actually funneling money out of the hands of the poor people in the city and making the area worse.
The discussions were still going on when I graduated in 2006, but I drove through this spring, and the whole area is different. There are new roads, new buildings, and it looks like a MAJOR upgrade for the area, which used to be all dilapidated buildings from the steel times and lots of empty, ugly property surrounding it. It seems to have done a good thing for the landscape (from the outsiders perspective), but I don't know if it has been a net positive for the residents or not.
You may want to do some research on that project and what the pros and cons have been since completion.

Try: https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/grants/187679.pdf, since it was federally funded it's not put out by someone with an agenda like many other reports seem to be blatant cheerleading or fear mongering.
The ultra short version is, a casino can have a positive impact, negative impact, or no impact at all on crime in a community, but generally speaking will excaserbate the prevailing trends with crimes. E.g. if you live in a pretty decent area, it'll stay that way. If it's a shady area, it's much more likely to spur on crime although they do note that leadership, policy and how the community handles it are the biggest factors. At least that's what I got out of my quick skim...
Generally it seems there's as many pros as there are cons, and with any large organization / business, it all is down to leadership both of the business entity and the community which houses it.
Also try this: http://www.communityresearchpartners...%201-21-10.pdf particularly Table 4.
Thanks guys. Food for thought.
I have a few properties that are close to being considered for a casino in western ma so i have a vested interest in the project. I did my resaerch a few years ago when i all the talk of a casino out here started to pick up speed. Some of the finding really disturbed me.
When a casino first comes to the area its usually good for everyone. Lots more local services and a large influx of money for the community. After the initial honeymoon wears off its kinda down hill. Towns mismanage the money and claim they are broke, local services like the police start targeting more locals than ever before, and residents tend to move away because they cant afford the area anymore or the area has degraded to such a point its just not the same.
The casino raise property value alot in the surrounding areas so alot of people that should be there cant be and are replaced by more affluent people. more money in the area causes everything to go up in price. Pretty soon the original locals cant afford to shop in the area anymore and because the property values have gone up so much they have to pay alot more in taxes. Youd think the casino money would go to lower property taxes but it only applies to the first few years then the towns start blowing money and need to raise taxes. I wish it was just a few areas that ended up like that but my research showed nearly every casino destroyed the area's local population to some extent. Granted they add alot of new jobs but most of there employees come from out of the community so locals dont really reep the rewards of employment. How many of your neighbors can deal cards or be pit bosses.
