As soon as I saw the scene I expected the tourag to win. It came down to tires. Try the same testing the dirt.
The truck started bouncing and lost traction. The fact that it lost traction is effectively proof that it had more torque.
I've seen many of these competitions...and seen small mazda pickups pull hummers
yes, it's just tires/traction
And in this case an empty pickup bed is a tauregs best friend. Two tires lost traction instantly.
This guy in the truck deserves to lose for accepting the challenge on road with mud tires.

I think those 'stacks cast the pickup owner in a certain light right away. But yeah.
He did have it locked in 4Lo, reportedly. So theoretically the empty bed wan't quite that much of a liability.
Doesnr matter what gear your in if the tires just lift.
Back tires lifted instantly.

Is that an old V-10 touareg? They had a lot of power, 500+lbft. Their 4WD system is much more advanced than the truck's, if it starts to wheel hop, it will drop power to that axles slightly to allow it to regain. The big 3/4 ton trucks don't have that ability. But it probably had a lot to do with the hard rubber cleaty tires and smooth hard pavement. But it is funny the grocery getter beat up the testosterone hauler.
recently, I saw an episode of Mythbusters, the vehicle that out pulled everything was a Jeep Cherokee 4.0

I'd be impressed, except I've seen the tractors they use at the airport for that duty and they don't have anywhere near as impressive a motor and get the job done just fine...
But aren't those things geared to top out at like 20 MPH?!
Getting a highway capable passenger vehicle to do that-without monkeying with the trans-is worthy of being impressed, IMO.
Eh, he eased into it as directed. If you remember, he was told no more than 2k RPM, period. He never even got that high, just let the torque converter plus low range 4wd (2:1 reduction IIRC) do it's thing. My grandfather used to use a slant 6 Dodge pickup to move mobile homes that way. Hook the truck up, put it in gear (2WD so no transfer case reduction) and bump the idle on the carb and it'd eventually walk up to speed on it's own.
They added 4.3 TONS of weight to the car to help with traction. Why is the suspension not squatting/twisting? It looks perfectly level.
