Very frustrated with video editing software

I'm trying to edit some videos I took at recent trackdays with my GoPro and I'm pulling my freaking hair out.

So far I've converted the MP4 files to AVI's and using a couple different programs has been completely unsuccessful...

Windows Live Movie Maker seems to load the file OK and I can play the video through the program, but all the tiles have exclamation points in them and the editing selections are shadowed out...

    Screenshot 2014-09-28 09.00.58 by mrream1, on Flickr

I tried the GoPro software and it can't read the AVI (which doesn't make any sense to me), and attempting to convert the file from MP4 to whatever format the GoPro software changes it to causes my computer to crash.

I've also tried using VSDC Free Video Editor and that won't work either.

My computer has a dual core processor, 2.0 ghz and 4gig of ram. It's rather old and probably a little bogged down but I performed all sorts of cleaning and defraged it last night, still a no go...

Please help before I smash this f'ing thing!!!!!!!

Re: Very frustrated with video editing software

Having used Movie Maker, I just edited the file in the same format that GoPro records it in. Import, edit, save, done. No file converting.

Pete, when I try to upload the file (MP4) without converting it this is what happens.

Are you using Windows Live Movie Maker? Maybe my version is out of date?

    yup.

Is the file corrupted or something? Can you watch it as is, unedited?

Try opening a different file w/ WLMM?

I can play the file just fine with a variety of different players...

I'm pretty sure that a few months ago I tried opening smaller files and that seemed to work fine, that's why I was thinking it may be a hardware issue, but at the same time I feel like this laptop should have enough power to handle these ~18 minute videos...

I may try uninstalling WLMM and reinstalling it?

Re: Very frustrated with video editing software

It sounds like you may be at or below the minimum requirements for GoPro Studio 2.0, and certainly do not meet the recommended setup.

    http://gopro.com/support/articles/wh...r-gopro-studio

The minimums are at least a Core2Duo processor, which is a later version of Intel Dual Core. And a graphics card that will run OpenGL 1.2.

You can check your graphics card specs here.

    1. Open the Windows Run dialog box (Click Start > Run).
    2. Type dxdiag to access a diagnostic tool that lists the graphics card information.

Here are those specs, all gibberish to me...

**EDIT** I was able to make some progress with Window Movie Maker (not Windows Live Movie Maker), edited the video to my liking. Problem is the save is 0% complete with 20,000+ minutes remaining to finish, and climbing....

I'm especially confused now, just got off a customer service chat from a Microsoft website where I redownloaded Windows Movie Maker, according to that person Windows Live Movie Maker doesn't support MP4...

Well I found a very basic solution, SolveigMM AVI Trimmer. It trims the video very easily, but that's it, no transitions, no inserting text, nuthin... I'll probably link the vid on the Razee trackday thread.

There are much newer driver versions for that video card. Older drivers might not support newer versions of OpenGL.

Warning, it can be difficult to update some NVIDIA card types, including this one. You will want to start with a driver from the computer's OEM website, and not NVIDIAs, as they do not test all drivers for compatibility.

Re: Very frustrated with video editing software

Jeff, I checked out HP's website and I couldn't find much that was directly related to the video card drivers. So, I did some googling and selected what appeared to be an updated driver with a fair amount of internet credibility... Well, I downloaded it, installed it, and my computer still works! I'm sick of working on this today so I'll give the editing a shot tomorrow, but thanks for giving me some ideas to try.

ffmpeg is free software that will do basic cuts, merges, etc. It is all command line driven. It is what I use to trim my track day vids. Very fast and works with many codecs without reducing quality in any way.

Unfortunately the command line know-how is above my head...

What happens if you let it sit? (Maybe max of 2hrs, but I'd expect results in much less) Does it eventually start making progress? Usually that kind of event means it's doing some preparation before doing the processing. So the percentage, and time calculation is based on the first step, which is in-progress. If you want some indication the computer is actually doing something, pop up Windows Task Manager, and sort the processes tab by CPU %. Another indication is your hard drive activity light going near-solid when you click go. A computer which is under-powered for these tasks will just take longer. It doesn't usually result in a big nothing.

Unfortunately, I'm not experienced with GoPro specifically, but I was surprised your first step talks about converting. Why can't it be editted in whatever format it starts out as with GoPro? Conversion is a CPU-intensive process, and if it is a lossy codec (which it probably is), each conversion/export to a new format means another layer of quality loss.

Ya...you gots some sort of software issue...it shouldn't be this hard

    I open:

    add my media

wlmm will "prepare" the video (look at progress bar on lower left hand screen) - this usually takes a few mins

    voila! edit away!
