Agreed - I've worked hard to get my credit rating where it is, and don't feel like having it taken down by a loophole in the system.
I look at it this way - I'm looking to add in a second vehicle (third if you count the spare car in the family - Hyundai Accent - that I have use of). I'm in a position that car dealers hate to work with. I WANT a car, I don't NEED it. I don't need to play the games, and I don't see other customers breaking their doors down throwing money at them.
Worst case - I don't get a car/truck/SUV this time around. I do however get my small existing home equity loan re-financed at over a 1.4% rate reduction. It's not all the money in the world over the length of the loan - but it's money in my pocket in the long run...

Maybe I'm reading this wrong...
Home equity at 5.6+- is a 1.4% better rate than your mortgage, so mortgage is about 7% ?
If you have the good credit you just mentioned you could refinance the whole thing right now for about 5% for a 30 year loan and save a ton of cash.
My mortgage is fixed at 5.6% and I have been paying on it for about 10 years. The existing HEL I have is at 7.3% (I was stuck when I took it out) and planned to be paid off in about 4 years. The HEL I'm looking at has a 5.9% rate. Keeping the payments the same as current has it paid off in a shorter period of time.
I'm keeping my eye on primary mortgage rates - if something pops up at 4.5% or lower with minimal closing costs I'll be jumping on it.
