I need help picking a bank...

Ladies, I need your help picking out a bank; I gotta transfer my money out of Australia into the U.S. but have no real idea who to bank with.

The missus banks with Peoples, who I think are now called TD Banknorth, and she seems pretty happy with them. They charge fees if you have a low balance though, but it seems most banks do that? Some friends bank with Bank of America but I don't know if they have branches in Maine -- their website says there are branches, but I'm not sure if they're operated by another bank or not.

Suggestions? Thanks... bitches.

I quit Banknorth to be with Bank of America. I do all my stuff from ATM's stations, and Banknorth just don't have a lot of ATM's locations around here. Bank of America is everywhere, so I switched. Man God is with them too, and a few people I know who were with Banknorth switched to Bank of America for different reasons.

Stay away from Ocean Bank in Maine. They are part of an Evil Empire.
I have a friend in Maine and he uses Fleet. He's seems happy with them.

Citizens is decent. I used to have them but switch becuase i am poor and didn't keep the "minimum amount' they wanted to avoid fees (why is always the poor people who get fucked with extra fees?). So i switched to Wainwright. I'm not a big fan of large corporate banks (bank of amereica). It citizens wasn't taking money out of my pocket, i would have stayed with them. depending on how deep you pockets are, you may not have any of the problems i did.

I also used to use Citizens bank (i actually still have a savings account with them) but everytime I needed to go to the bank, I always waited in long lines for 10-15 minutes, plus the closest one was 15 minutes from my house. I've found better service with small banks, no lines and they 4 minutes from my house... oh yeah, free checking with no minimum balance Thank you Bank RI

Fleet = Bank of America (at least in MA)

Thanks for all the replies folks. I'll add Citizens to my list, and make sure I check out TD Banknorth and Bank of America too. The two things that are important to me is online banking and lots of ATMs -- I very rarely need to speak to an actual human.
