So I got a job offer today. Those of you who know me can probably guess where it is. It's a full time position supervising a bottling line two days a week and maintaining/engineering current and future systems for the facility. It's decent pay and hours, full benefits (including all the free "product" i want) and the people are great to work for. It's mechanical, electrical, plumbing, IT, managerial, and some pretty crazy engineering rolled into one person. And they want me to do it which is flattering.
I think this may be a perfect ticket out of IT Support. It's not a path that has a nice bright ending from the looks of it.
I would have to move north to Westminster, Ashburnham(my hometown) or surrounding areas. All my family and friends are up there. It's cheaper to live up there. It's quieter and a better quality of life (IMHO). I could actually afford a starter house with my woman.
I don't feel that my skills are utilized fully where I work currently. I also don't think I am paid how much I am worth.
On the other hand:
My current job is recent to me. I just got moved into the IT department and am enjoying it. The company I work for is doing rediculously well and gives quarterly bonuses (why hello KLR650!), one of which I will receive tomorrow. I'm still in the learning process but am doing very well so far. I'm 6 months in to my new position and have been at the company 1 year and 5 months. The people are great who I work with (though a lot of assholes internally that I have to support) and I don't want to screw them over.
It seems like a pretty easy decision. Just lookin for opinions, thoughts, etc....kinda a big decision for me.

2 questions:
-1- would you be happy doing it?
-2- would you be good enough, or motivated enough to be good no matter what the 'cost' to maintain such happiness ?
If yes - then rockon
Oh and regards to your PM, uhh...yeah, get that KLR too![]()
Already got it...pickin it up tomorrow night![]()
I really do think I'd be happy doing this job. It uses SO many more of my skills. Nevermind the 38% raise.....

There is more to a job then what it pays. If the new offer sounds like it will challenge and satisfy you (and that is truely what you want) go for it. It sounds like moving will also let you live somewhere you can be happy (will the Misses be happy too?). Do a simple pro/con sheet (looks like you have already done most of it) and see where it balances out. Good Luck and congratulations on the offer. Even if you say 'No' it's always nice to be asked...

Think about the growth, which place has more growth potential.
However, I know you would be happy at the new place!

More money, lower cost of living, and a more diverse job? Sounds like everything is pointed in the right direction.
Good luck!

38% raise? Does that mean you will finally acknowledge that you make much more than me?
I'd say take the new possition, your current company will understand, they may even offer you something better. Any boss will understand the considerations between loyalty and advancement and they know which they would choose for themselves.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
Yeah, it's significant. I'll let you know in person when you come to THE GAP with us exactly the numbers I'm talkin about. If you don't go you get NOTHING!!!!![]()

The company I'm in now is growing wonderfully, but the pay isn't there. IT Support just isn't what it used to be. Not here anyways.
The company I'm going to (bringing the signed offer letter up after work, their router died anyways so I gotta go replace it, damn pre-cisco Linksys) is definitly growing in a big way. That is the reason for this job offer.
So....I'm in a much better position to buy a house now....Already found a 3900 square footer with 2 car garage and a barn.....oh sweet jesus (gotta practice sayings like that for the Gap...)

I thought the waitress at the BBQ place was going to burn a hole through you with her eye's when you were trying to decide what to order. "Oh jesus christ, I don't know...um...." does not go over too well down there. As much as I'm dieing to go, I've tried to justify it through every angle and there is just no way I can, trust me I'm not happy about it at all. I'll have to wait for next year. Unless that company has a possition for me with a 38% raise?

I've already been offered the $ to cover the rental and such, it's just not a smart idea. I have my first week of classes that week and I have to somehow come up with $7000 to pay for them as well. This should be interesting as I stuggle to come up with $200 for entrance fees at the races.

Clayton,
Seems you already know that you want to take the job, just looking for some re-assurance that your making the right decision.
You gotta risk something to gain something. Doesn't appear to be a big risk and the gain is a guranteed one....your salary.
Also, consider how much it will boost your resume adding more job qualifications from the new position. It will only make you more marketable down the road if things don't really work out.
Go for it.
Congrats man!

Yeah, I did decide already as it wasn't much of a decision to begin with. Just wanted reassurance. It's a big leap for me and I wanted to make sure it sounded ok.
Dropped off the signed offer letter tonight. Within a month, I will be a full time employee at Wachusett Brewery![]()
Tellin my current boss tomorrow. I have NO complaints (well, maybe more money) at where I am working now. They are great people, a fun job and I learned tons. I'm hosting a BBQ tomorrow for my entire department so perhaps that would be the best time to break the news. I'll be meeting with my boss tomorrow morning bright and early to let him know what's going on.
Who would like some beer?

It is a written benefit in the statement of benefits and compensation that I get as much as I want for free(that's how it's been for the last year anyways, but now I'll be there every day to bring home goodness!)
