    Momma Yorkie expecting...

Our female Yorkie is expecting her first litter of pups. I believe they are going to show themselves during the night or sometimes in the next 24 hours...momma is restless and her temperature has dropped below normal in the last 12 hours.

I'm thinking there is at least 3 pups in her tummy. It's nice to feel them move and kick. Everything is ready for her. I set up a delivery box with papers and a small blanket, as well as a clean comfy/cozy bed with a heating pad to keep it nicely warm. She's been having a special diet of mashed sweet potatoes and chicken broth, along with puppy milk twice a day, and NutriCal for supplement vitamins and nutrients.

I have the whole kit for delivery, to be able to help along with tying the ombilical cords, cleaning, aspirating mucus in nostrils, small digital scale to weight the pups, notepad and pen to take notes, etc.

I'm so nervous for her and the pups but very excited. Apparently her male is NOT happy to be separated from her, he's been crying like crazy. They can still touch and sniff each other thru the baby gate separating them. I'll try to remember to take pictures!!

She is due on Friday. I made a mistake counting the days, I thought she was a day from delivering them. Gestation is 63 days, so this is this coming Friday. I took her to the vet for an exam to make sure everything was going OK, and they took Xrays of her belly, she has 3 little pups in there. Momma is getting tired. I barely leave the house, and if I have to, it's only for quick errands. I don't want her to be alone when it will happen. She has switched to puppy food now, she's not crazy about it, but she will get used to it I'm sure. She needs nutrients found in that food that is not as available in regular food, for her and the pups she will be nursing.

Nope. We will find them GOOD homes when the time comes. They will be at a very minimum 8 weeks of age before I let them go anywhere. Probably more around 10 weeks, actually. I want them to have time with mom and their litter mates to develop social skills. They will have their first shots and deworming done by the time they are ready to leave. I'm already not looking forward to that...it will be hard to let them go.

Post pics of the little pups when they come.

Even though I know it all works the same way, I found it almost odd to read you describe your dog's pregnancy and delivery prep so human like. I never had a pet that gave birth, so I guess it never occured to me to feel the puppies kick.

3 puppies, one female and two males. All three in the 6 onces range. Mom and pups are doing great. It took about one hour and half to deliver all three of them.

    Re: Momma Yorkie expecting...

So we took some pictures, but since we took them with the new Canon camera, we had issues resizing them...somehow the computer would not let us temper with the original, like there is a author rights thing on them. We have to fix that.

Mommy trust only her humans around her babies. She won't let the other dogs approach them or the bed...at all. They're all doing great. Babies are feeding and gaining weight.

Daddy "Cookie" (in all of his 4 pounds glory)

Mommy "Bitsie" feeding her pups (mom's normal weight is 6.5 pounds)

She's watching over them like a hawk...

They are absolutely adorable! I'm actually a little surprised at how big the puppies are - they all look very strong and healthy! I'm so glad everything went well.

Their weight at birth was between 6.2 and 6.5 ozs, all 3 of them. The vet was happy to hear that and told me that this was a very good weight for healthy pups! The mom eats Eagle Pack Holistic food (for puppies), and the pups will eat the same when they are bigger. Right now they are drinking often and gaining weight, which I'm very happy about.
