I want a small-ish, but not really small, device for traveling and around the house and garage, thinking of a netbook with SSD, 11.6" display. When I search the Web, the ones that come up are all Chromebook. Is Chromebook good?
"Most popular" came up as Acer Chromebook C720-2844 16GB SSD 11.6"
Advice sought and appreciated,
Kurt

Chromebooks need an internet connection to do anything. The reason they are so cheap is that they don't have Windows on them, they just run an OS version of the Chrome browser. If that's good enough for you, then it'll do the job just fine.

Thanks, that might work for most of what I have in mind, but I think I'll keep searching out options, still want the SSD, though.

Like Clayton said, Chromebooks are only good with a constant internet connection. They rely heavily on the cloud, which is why their hard drives are so small.
Netbooks really aren't a "thing" anymore since the tablet craze started. Now it's 2in1, small laptops/ultrabooks, and convertible style tablets like the Surface.
Thanks. Learning curve for someone with a desktop and a dumbphone.

SSD is available anywhere where there's a web connection.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
I'd go with a Chromebook for what your stated use is. They most all have SSD's these days. Boot time is about 7-10 seconds even with a traditional drive btw.
You'll need to upload your music to Google Music if you want to listen to it from there. Or use Pandora/Spotify.

I'm a fan of chromebooks. Especially if you can use your phone as a hotspot. Open the screen and BAM you're online. No waiting for boot up, no mysterious lagging as bullshit software runs in the background without you even knowing, blah, blah. Oh yeah, and it keeps itself udated.
No brainer.
Sounding better all the time.
Considering this one:
Acer Chromebook C720-2844 - Celeron 2955U / 1.4 GHz - Chrome OS - 4 GB RAM - 16 GB SSD - 11.6" ComfyView 1366 x 768 ( HD ) - Intel HD Graphics

I ended up going with the Samsung Ativ. It is more expensive than what you are looking at but the main plus for me was that it was a windows OS as I use this for trackside tuning of my Bazzaz as well as QStarz data. There is a USB port on the tablet itself. Most of these have the USB on the keyboard which is a bummer because you always have to lug it around. Battery life is great, I use this during my long ass flights and watch movies/surf the web.
If I did not have a need for the win32 application support, I would definitely be going in the direction you are looking.

OK, I think I have it narrowed down to two models of Acer Chromebook 13. They are identical except for two things, "standard memory" and screen resolution, same price around $300.

Standard Memory: 2 GB
Screen Mode: Full HD
Screen Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Availability: "coming soon"
Chromebook 13 CB5-311-T9Y2
http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/...t/NX.MPRAA.004
Standard Memory: 4 GB
Screen Mode : HD
Screen Resolution: 1366 x 768
Availability: appears to be available, says "in stock" at newegg.
For my purposes, I'm thinking that the higher screen resolution is more important than the additional memory. But then I have to wait for it to become available.
Opinions?
Thanks,
Kurt

I'd go higher res. Memory won't do much on a Chromebook.

I have the HP chromebook 14, love it so far. Works great for web browsing and general home use, boot up time on mine is ~5-6 seconds. By far the best thing about is the battery life, it will easily go a full day browsing and only use have 1/2 the battery. That is including some streaming. My only complaint with the HP 14 is the resolution is the same as the HP 11, so the screen is not as sharp as it should be.

Thanks, Everyone, I ordered the ACER Chromebook 13 with the higher resolution screen, should be here by EOW.

Got it today, really easy to start using it. Not sure how I connected to my FiOS router, but I did somehow
Overall, it's a little bigger than I originally had in mind, but worth it for the bigger, higher resolution screen.
