I still don't get why environmentalists hate hydro projects so much and so many have been removed? Isn't worse for the environment to increase our use of oil. Kind of like Peta telling Ben and Jerry's to use breast milk.

+1 hyrdo's just pass water, no emissions, no pollution. Plus they can provide some kick ass white water on demand.

I'm not sure who currently owns and operates them but if you have the clout, it would be sweet to get tours of some of the hydro facilities along the Deerfield River, especially Bear Swamp Generating Station.

I am a Systems Operator. Basically there are guys at a hydro plant that control things locally, they report to their chief, their chief reports to me. all in all I have control of 74 different plants. I decide when and how we run and monitor the entire system and respond to emergency situations.

everything is a hard hat area and our insurance is way strict. I wish tours could be done because most of these plant are 80-100 years old and are amazing to see in person. the plants were all built as pieces of art and it is amazing to think of how things built so long ago are still working properly. in fact the only plants that have problems are the ones we have tried to "bring into the digital age". it is funny that everyone is on this green kick and thinks hydro is this new idea and it has been around since the inception of commercial power.

Many small ( by commercial standards ) have been bought up and closed down. You can't have all these small dams and mills providing cheap local electricity.

Federal, State and local governments, through the force of utility companies ( & unwitting environment groups ), have made it nearly impossible for anyone to revitalize or build a new hydro project of even modest size.

it is amazing to me that all these so called green initiatives are against hydro. where else are you going to get green energy? wind? solar? keep dreaming. we have a trusted proven method with almost zero impact and someone will step up and say "what about the fish?". the fish are fine and our regs require us to bend over backwards for them. i personally am going out to a site in november to help salmon get over the damn to spawn. now if one or five make it into my cooler that is a different story...
