Im currently a senior engineering major and as my final engineering project my groups decided to design a new safety system for motorcycles. It is still in the preliminary stages right now but as the project progresses I will keep you updated.

As for right now I need your help by completing a short survey to gauge some questions regarding motorcycle safety. Take 5 minutes and please complete the survey below

I voted but just so you know...and I don't mean to be a dick - but that's a pretty poor survey interface. I've never seen something that makes you click "vote" for every question so I ripped through selecting my answers and clicked the button at the bottom - but obviously it didn't work as expected. I'm sure doing it that way discourages people from submitting all of their votes.

    good luck!

I know its a crappy interface but when you use pre made survey tools you gotta go by what they have out. It would be cool if it was all one vote but I dont have the knowledge or time to learn to make those forms

    what kind of safty system?

    a) more cushion?

    b) a parachute that will land you safely if you're airborne?

    c) a sensing device that will sense danger ahead?

Maybe all of the above maybe none of the above right now its still up in the air were just doing the feaseability and consumer interest statistics. The design of the system wil come later on right now were just trying to establish nedd and current trends

Well our instructors exact words were "Dont design the system with what you think is the soultion because 5 out of 6 times you will be biased and end up with the wrong solution" So wer ejust keeping our options open and gauging where people are at as far as safety goes.

As the project progresses i will keep everyone updated

Voted, but that was very annoying having to vote seperately for each question.

If I may... I was surprised to see people were concerned with themselves and not their machines in a crash.

I've crashed. I've crashed a lot. Not once was I ever concerned with myself; it was always "How's my bike?"

In my crashes, I never thought about the hospital bill, only the bike repair bill.

Leads me to believe; many that answered have never crashed.

legalspeed...please tell me you were being sarcastic posting this...right? RIGHT? lol

I would be more concerned with the hospital bill than the bike. More concern with me being in one piece than some broken plastic!

Hahaha! See V, you've never crashed before have you!! Dan is absolutely right though... my first thought after i crashed was "SHIT i hope the frame is ok", or "SHIT I hope the bike can still pass tech inspection so i can do the next session".

think about it this way V... if you and one of your children were in an accident, who would you be more concerned about? yourself, or your child? that's how bikes should be

MM...sorry, I guess we think VERY differently. First of, I don't compare a piece of plastic with my children. lol Yes, I'd be worried about my bike of course, but more than I would be about my own safety and health, hell no...I value my life more than my bike. And I value to stay alive to see my kids after a bike ride. That's why when I ride, I always keep them in my mind to avoid doing stupid things. And it works. I guess you have to have kids to know the feeling.

I voted. However, I had a hard time with what causes more accidents. I so bad wanted to vote other vehicles, as I've seen so many caused by other people "not seeing" us. My accident was because of someone else. But I voted for ( I know I'm going to get flamed for this) operator error. Alot of accidents are caused by riding too fast, doing stunts, passing illegally, etc. As far as being concerned with self or bike, I voted self even though I am concerned with my bike too! I was more pissed at my bike being down and damaged because of the asshole, but did go to the hospital to make sure everything was fine.
    Good luck!

    Interesting...

First off, I'd like to encourage people to vote, let's help this person out!!

    Second:
Accident causes. From what I've experienced and heard from friends, it's the other vehicles not planning ahead.

Driving on long distances regularly; I obsevred this:

    changing vehicle direction:

    Acutual:
Turn wheel first, look over shoulder second, use blinker last.

    Should be:
Use blinker first, look over shoulder second, turn wheel last.

Lots of people daydream, then Opps! must turn NOW!
    Bam!
What was that? Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No look, It's super TWRAYINMA!!!

Good luck with your safety device.

    How about an HID helmet?

    A glowing lid.

HID High Intensity Discharge; these are used in headlamps, it's an alternative to light bulb headlamps, more like filling the glass and making a flourescent light out of it.
