    Question for the Subaru people

So I'm thinking about getting a 2010 WRX. Any reliability issues with the new ones? Any specific PITA normal maintenance requirements? I'm not new to turbocharged motors, just new to gasoline-powered turbo motors.

This may be soon followed by a "what's the best cheap/easy/reliable way to give my WRX more power" thread, but not yet. I'm still not sure I can go from a full-size pickup to a WRX.

I'd say Chris (something-or-other-gigawatt) would be the authority on that...

Re: Question for the Subaru people

TBM out at Wachusett is next weekend - huge Subie meet. Go, gawk, talk. You won't regret it.

The newer WRX's are solid. The earlier ones (2.0L - 2002-2005) had some issues if they were driven hard, but nothing huge. Oil changes are easy, there's no particular maint that's an issue.

I'm on my second new Subie - first was a WRX, this one is a straight Impreza. I've put 60K+ on each, no problems with either. Next one, if I don't get a pickup, will be another WRX.

I know the 09 had some engine issues (spun bearing) but I don't know if they fix it on the 2010. Like neuthunder said, just go on nasioc and you'll be able to find almost everything you need/want to know. Good luck.

Re: Question for the Subaru people

As Scott said, check out http://www.wickedbigmeet.com/ next weekend!

People usually lump "the early ones" altogether, but it was the transmission on the 2002, the first year the WRX was available, that gave issue -- and I think it was mostly people who drove it hard, not really knowing you can't dump the clutch. Bad things will happen.

There's nothing that I can think of that would be PITA maint. issues, especially for a newer car!

I've owned a 2003 Subaru Impreza Outback and now a 2005 Saab 92x... "Wait a minute," you say? The Saab 92x is just a rebadged Impreza.

I would certainly check out nasioc.com - but read threads with the understanding that as the price of the 2002-2004 WRX's drop, younger, perhaps less educated (about cars) drivers are picking them up and posting threads. Tread carefully. The regional forum, nesic.nasioc.com is usually pretty good.

You might want to check http://newenglandsubarus.com/ as well - seems to be a good group of folks there.

BTW, cheap/easy/reliable way to get power? Whenever you mod a car, you potentially risk reliability - it's a risk that any enthusiast takes. Cheap? That depends on your frame of reference... a tune can run anywhere from $150 - $500 (and beyond), but once you start getting into changing parts, you're typically talking about retuning for the new mod (intake, exhaust, etc...). Where as some cars can get a lot from just an exhaust, you need to put a little more into a Subaru to get the same power. It all really depends on what you want to do with the car.

    Good luck!

Not much for reliability issues at all. its a great car.

Clutch jobs arent that great in them, but you shouldnt have to worry about that for a while, and really, what clutch job is easy?

Keep in mind youre gonna have to run 93 all the time.

And set aside money for a tune pretty much right off. They arent the best off the shelf, and even if you dont think you care about power, youll run better and get better gas mileage with a good tune.

Youre making a great choice for a new england car. Simply tanks in the snow!

keep in mind that nasioc.com is one of the worst forums ever

half its users hate subarus and hate modding cars.

90% of the posts are "SEARCH NOOB!"

    its quite frustrating

Is that on an STI or WRX, though?

I'm plenty happy with mine @ Stage 2, though I have considered getting a hybrid TD04 w/ 19t upgrade.... Hmmmm.
