Quick question about cops blowing through red lights.

How would you feel or what would you be thinking if you'd witnessed an officer of the law display a momentary lapse of attentiveness and totally drive through a red light nearly (and by "nearly" I mean "definitely within 10 feet") hit a left-turning vehicle in the oncoming lane? Said officer continues to drive on as if nothing has ever happened.

Re: Quick question about cops blowing through red lights.

Wait, in this scenario, he HIT another vehicle? Without Lights and Sirens?

Hell, I'd call the police department and report a hit and run. Possibly follow said police car and see if he nailed anyone else.

The badge doesn't make him special.

*PS* to answer the question, I'd feel the same way about it as any other hit & run, pissed off.

If you run through a red light does the cop say "no problem, people make mistakes"?

Relax guys, I'm sure the cop pulled himself over & gave himself a ticket when he realized what he'd done.

I wonder what happens when he goes to court? Does he win automatically b/c the cop doesn't show?

Some of them actually do. The just make the stop to make sure there's nothing else going on. Quite a few people talk their way into tickets. Not always the case, but certainly not infrequent either.

    Female officer.

Mistake, sure. Any of us would own some kind of ticket and a field sobriety test.

Thing is, why not make an attempt to apologise to the folks that were almost hit? Or is that just me?

I'd feel self-rightous and cooler than the cop for probably about an hour. I'd tell some people about it. Then I'd try and remember to be grateful that I didn't witness a cop actually hitting and injuring someone else.

Then I'd let it go and get on with my life...!

Its worth reporting. Just your call alone might not make a difference, but if this guy is a repeat offender and there's enough irritated/concerned citizens it could help.

I'd be pissed, but I woudn't call the station. Instead I would come home and log into a forum and bitch about the officer who feels she is above the law.

Re: Quick question about cops blowing through red lights.

Yeah, I get my panties in a bunch every time I get passed on the interstate by an officer with no flashing lights. What gives them the right to do 75 or 80? Why is it safe for them but not me? It's definately not a fight worth having though. I'm pretty sure I'd never win that fight...

Most police departments have a professional standards group, which takes citizen complaints. Sorta like a small departments Internal Affairs.

You can always call them and they do take it seriously.

Re: Quick question about cops blowing through red lights.

To take this a bit further, I've got a SERIOUS question about something similar. I see it happen a lot in Manchester:

Similar to what bergs saw yet when I see it, they DO hit the lights. The second they're through the intersection though, lights off and just doddling along. Again, I see this A LOT in Manch - not just an isolated incident...

Any resident LEO's have an angle on that?

I don't know why, but I'm horny. Something about a female officer blowing anything makes me tingle.

Here in Broward County, we have a toll free number (1-800-96-ABUSE) to report such instances of abuse by the police and sheriff's department.

I would never use it in the case of a "near-miss" though. Like Randy said, everyone makes mistakes and/or lapses in judgment.

We're missing the important question (well except Jackie).
