This is my buddies '05 RX-1. Mine is identical but blue. We took this pic cause a friend of ours out west claimed RX-1's are so heavy it's tough to get them to lift the skis. We dialed his control rod out further than the manual recomends, then he stood on the back and nailed it from a dead stop. I actually snapped the pick as the front of the machine was coming back down so I didn't get the full lift. It will just about flip itself over with the rod like that. If you keep it within factory specs it will get what you see here.

Nice looking and sounding machines. I have not owned a sled in years because the trails are so rocky around here, and we never seem to get enough snow - hence the recent quad purchase.
What is a "control rod?" I suspect it has something to with rear suspension ride height adjustment...
How do the newer 4 stroke machines compare? And what are the "hot" machines to own currently? I tuned out of the sled game back when the Polaris Indy 600's were the machine to beat (mid 80's?).
Yup.....They call them RX1ton but great sleds...Mu bud had an Apex

I need a friend with an extra sled so I can go for a ride. I've never been, but really want to go sometime.
Maybe we will get lucky and Joel will post a pic of his sno hawk or whatever its called.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

I used to terrorize the Bangor area on a 1984 Ski Doo Safari 377, miss that lite little rig. Top speed was MAYBE 65mph, but it couldn't be touched in the woods or in the twisties. 1mm oversized pistons, deep lug track, full carbide runners, ski skins and ski brackets to widen it's stance by 3 inches plus heated grips I loved that rig. Lite enough that my skinny self could just about pick it entirely up if needed.
I dunno if I could deal with a modern sled, if it got stuck I'd be screwed.
What is a control rod? Its an adjustment that controls the weight transfer of the machine. The best way to understand sled suspension is to compare the sled to a see saw with the pivot point somewhere under the handlebars or gas tank. As the sled accelerates, and brakes, it rocks back and forth on that pivot point. There are many adjustments that can be made to control how this rocking motion occurs through the suspenion. The control rod in the Yamaha's is a very convenient and effective way of altering it. Dial it one way and it limits the sled from rocking back to the point where the skis won't come of the ground no matter how hard you hit the throttle. Dial it the other way and it allows the sled to tip back into the rear suspension to the point where you get ski lift like in the pic I posted.
I love the new four strokes. Most of what you hear about them is not true. Sure they are heavy but Yamaha has done a great job with the suspension to keep them feeling light. The compromise is that they don't jump well, and they suck in deep powder as it's in these areas you feel the weight. If you are like me, (like to keep it on the ground and on the trail) they are amazing machines, and the weight isn't an issue. The key with the Yammi's is getting your sled set up right and buying a good pair of aftermarket skis.
