    really strong beer

So I was looking for something different at the beer store.
I had never heard of "steel reserve" before, brewed in texas. there was no indication of alcohol content on the box. only that it had a "high gravity" and was brewed longer than other premimum beers.

Well it turns out that its 8.1% even higher than a molson XXX

Cheap too $7.99 a 12 pack. I almost think I should be drinking it out of a 40 0z. btl wrapped in a paper bag though.

nothing special about it, there aren't any noteable qualities, but if you wanna get loopy for cheap, have at it.

Damn, so the reserve has finally made it to the northeast...we used to drink that shit in college...it'll get you drunk, sure, but I still prefer the 'cane...if it tastes like a fohty it better damn sure come in one...

With any luck, if the steelies are up here, yuengling can't be too far behind. Now that's a good cheap beer right there, 6 and change for a 12 pack and it tastes like beer not chilled motor oil

My brother loves yuengline. He gets his around Albany near his school. His local liquor store also has a god awful excuse for beer that comes in a plain white can with the word "BEER" printed on it in little block letters. It is cheap though!

Technically Steel Reserve is MALT LIQUOR, it does have a punch, I had two 40oz and was on my ass.

It reminded me of the private stock days but atleast with those you got a puzzle to try to figure out.

I guess maybe when I'm looking for something new to try I should stick to stuff that isn't served in a can. I'm not saying I won't end up finishing what I bought besauce that would just be a waste but I don't think I'll be buying that stuff again.

Although the last time I did this I discovered DOUBLE BASTARD which I think was in the 9 or 10 %range.

If you like heavy dark hoppy beers Samuel Adams has a Double Bock usually out in late winter.

    really strong beer

We make a beer called Green Monsta. It's hoppy and malty, a truely big beer.

It's up there in the alc. content. I'll get a hard number on Monday. Last I heard it was around 7.5% (I could be wrong)

The first time I tried it was about a year ago. I was sittin in the office just chattin with one of the owners and the marketing girl. He got me a pint, sat me down, let me drink half, then asked me what I thought the slogan should be. I replied in a wide eyed half-slur:

    "It'll get you drunk!"

They liked it but realistically couldn't use it. So you know what the slogan is now?

    "It'll sneak up on ya!"

If you want a good alcohol content, shoot for double bock's or IPA's. IPA's usually have at least 5% since the dry hopping really kicks up the percentage.

Some excellent beers with kick; all made by Unibroue:

    Don de Dieu - 9%

    Eau Bénite - 7.7%

La Fin du Monde - 9%

    La Fringante - 10%

    Maudite - 8%

Quelque Chose - 8% - If you like to try new things, try this one hot. Sounds odd but a sommelier at a nice restaurant I went to suggested it. I was pleasantly surprised.

    La Terrible - 10.5%

    Trois Pistoles - 9%

All of these beers are excellent but several can be difficult to find. La Fin du Monde, Maudite, and Don de Dieu are the more common ones around here and can be found at some better liquor stores. I usually pick it up at the Table & Vine on North King St. in Northampton MA and Austin Liquors in Worcester.

I almost forgot one. This one was a special batch to celebrate Unibroue's 11th anniversary. I just so happened to be in Quebec when it was available so I had to try it: La 11 - 11%

I also brew my own beer, usually buy a kit and add to it
non of them have come out really bad but some were better than others. They have all been drinkable.

    I have made

    GreenTea Ale
    BlueBerry Ginger
    Coffee Stout (Buzz Beer)
I made an Ipa for a daytona 200 party, called it NESR Race Fuel it came out in the 9.5% range.
Then there were the regular unfooled around with ones that came out good

    IPA
    ALE
    CANADIAN ALE
    RED ALE
    PALE ALE
    OATMEAL STOUT
    Toooo many to list

The initial investment in the equipment is roughly $100 or so, then after that its around $25 to make 2 1/2 cases of 12 oz btls.
    Roughly 5 gallons of beer.
Besides living out here in the country its a form of entertainment in the wintertime when you are stuck in the house, it gives you something to do

    really strong beer

I'm not a big fan of any malt liquors personally. They are just for getting sauced and there are better & higher alcohol forms for that (i.e. - Bourbon or Scotch for me).

I'm going to throw this out here again this year. I am the Lead brewer for Redhook and though that it would be great for us to organize a winter NESR get together. We could use the conference room at the brewery which can hold 100 people. We could get some vendors or manufacture rep's & maybe the LRRS people to give us some presentations and stuff. I could do brewery tours and of course tastings. Then we could have dinner and hit the town (portsmouth). If we scheduled this after the holiday's I'm sure it could go together easily.

    Any interest?

Thank god you can't get Billy Beer anymore. I guess if you make disgusting beer it doesn't last long.

I do have a can of 1996 Daytona Harley Davidson beer. I'm not drinking it though.

Redhook is publicly traded, and A-B owns 34% of the stock. We also have an agreement to distribute our beer through A-B distributors. This of course makes everyone assume we are owned by A-B. I have only seen A-B people at our brewery a few times and they were distribution guys. A-B from what I can tell doesn’t get involved at all in the brewing side that is all Redhook.
