He actually did "time travel". Him being farther away from earth means time moves faster for him.
It has nothing to.do.with distance from the earth exactly, it is about velocity. The faster you are going the slower time passes for you, relative to those who are at rest (on the surface of the planet)
at least that's how it was explained to me, by Nova or some other old school educational program.
