    How the times have changed

    Got this from another site ;

    HIGHSCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2010

    Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

    Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

    Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

    Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

    Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

    Scenario 6:
    Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

    Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
    1957 - Ants die.
2010- ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

    Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 –In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Re: How the times have changed

Watching the news over the last few days - Locally the state is trying to introduce legislation detailing games that can be played at summer camps... Red Rover, Tag, and Kickball are being eliminated because they're too dangerous and promote bullying...

I have a few thoughts. Is this really the most important thing they need to spend their time on? Is it really their place to make these rules (laws)? And - Give me a f'in break. Really?

Re: How the times have changed

I can understand some of the points being made by the OP, BUT some of it is obvious bullsshit and some of these situations are being handled better today than back in th 50's and 60's.

What about all of the kids that were molested by Catholic Priests back then that were just given a pass or when sally was repeatedly raped by her Dad and everyone just swept it under the rug.

I didn't whip my kids. Not because I couldn't but because I didn't have to.
I learned parenting skills that allowed me to manage my children more effectively.
I am not a perfect Dad but I sure hope I was just a little better than mine and I hope tha my kids learn from my mistakes when they have kids.

Like many of the people here, I lived through both time periods and having experienced both, I truly believe we are progressing as a society, not regressing.

I don't buy the "we were much better off back then" bullshit. This is just romanticism of the past and not an objective examination.

I was never allowed to bring a gun to school till I was in 10 years old in 5th grade, it was quite normal to bring the gun to school on the bus in the morning and walk home in the afternoon, plinking at squirrels

Scenario 2 - Don't agree with the 2010. It would be the same as 1957 except everyone would video tape it on their cell phones and post it on youtube/Facebook.

1979, Senior in High School. My buddies played in a band, I was a roadie, sound tech, effects person. Flash pots were huge back then. ( we weren't smart enough for air cannons ) I remember walking the halls of the HS and then in the Gym for the battle of the bands with 2 POUNDS of black powder for the flash pots. I had a cop come up to me and ask me what I was using. HE told me to add Magnesium to make the flash brighter. Can you imagine what would happen now?

Merrimack High School. Class of '97. My senior project for AP Chemistry was to make contact explosive and then demonstrate how it could be used for pranks (similar to snap caps) or utilitarian uses around the house (like blowing up stumps).

I grew up hunting and building flintlock rifles, apprenticed to an uncle thats well known for it. Once in middle school I did a project and wanted to bring in the rifle I had just finished as part of the presentation... ended up having to get a permit from the PD or something, something signed by the super intendant, and an officer had to be present.

I beg to differ. I started to see the shift in the early 90's. In my elementary and junior high school years, I got into a lot of fights (somehow I gave off a personna that was a ripe target). Thankfully in highschool, I learned to deal with things better, but I also started to see police get involved, and other legal issues. I remember thinking WTF, it's just a fight, and afterwards, it's usually over.

Class of '87 rural VT - During bird season kids walk through the halls in the morning with a shotgun, walk straight into the front office, hand it to the secretary (who BTW knew how to check to see if it was clear all by herself) so it could be kept in the Principals office for the day.

And I bet the reason it was kept in the principals office was so it didn't get damaged orsolen.

One big difference is that just about everyone's father back then was a WWII vet. They had a different perspective, some for the good and some for the bad.

I don't remember any real fights in grade school. I was involved in many during two years of Junior High, but they were after school.

Anyone who thinks ADD was "cured" by "paddling" is a dolt. That's why there are so many undiagnosed ADD adults. The Army has figured out how to train people with ADD: perhaps someday the schools will buy a clue.

I agree that in general this is nostalgic crap that wasn't written by someone who was there in 1957.

While I agree with you the teachers get fucked in this situation. They're expected to teach these children but are hand cuffed at every step. Parents end up drugging their kid up and giving them every excuse to fail and threaten litigation if challenged. Administrations bend to the will in fear of lawsuits and the cycle is repeated. Then throw in budget cuts and classroom sizes growing and you have a no win for children and teachers.
