from eric gorr's CR performance guide regarding 00-03 CR125's:

"...honda made a bold change in the top end of the CR125. The cylinder is nearly identical to the RS250 road racer design. There is a new exhaust valve that has only 3 main parts. The valve varies the effective stroke, port time-area, and duration. Overally Honda made a good decision to update this model. The new top end has a lot of potential. Many of the parts from 2000-2002 models interchange."

Best Value Mods: V-Force reed valve, porting, 12-tooth front sprocket, steel clutch plates, exhaust valve mods.

I bought it a few years ago literally in broken down in a box from a friend. He bought it, got home, ran it for half an hour and then noticed the fatal sound of bad crank bearings. Broke the whole bike down to rebuild the engine and never did. Then decided to move to California and that's when I acquired it.

I rebuilt the engine (top and bottom) using Wiseco parts, did proper break in procedures and then let my some ride it, strictly woods and a small track by us. He maybe rode 5 or 10 times and then got his permit and started riding on the street. The bike just sat around all last year. I think I threw a few friends on it a couple times. I have KDX 250, so just trying to clear out the garage a little. No sense in having a bike that I don't ride.

Sorry for the long story.

It's a fun, light, fast bike. It's a 2-stroke if I didn't mention that. I just ordered a new float needle for the carb and will be in next week, then the bike will be good to go.
