ok...I've tracked every tank of gas since I got it, and it doesn't matter if I drive it carefully, casually, or aggressively; it always gets 30-32mpg
here are my tanks (miles/gallons = MPG)
343.8/10.66 = 32.25
345.4/10.474 = 32.97
336/10.731 = 31.31
205.4/6.635 = 30.95
324.8/10.197 = 31.85
307.9/10.18 = 30.24
305.5/9.55 = 31.98
321/10.579 = 30.34
corolla's are ok, and def. better than the truck, but imho you can def. get a more economical car than this
Yeesh! I did a little better than that with my 1990 Corolla all-trac wagon. The worst I've ever got with a front wheel drive Corolla is 35-36mpg (winter using the remote starter alot) with a 5 speed. Corolla mileage starts to dropoff above 40mph and REALLY starts dropping off above 60mph.
I get about 45mpg on my 08 if I stay under 55mph. It sounds like you sit in traffic alot. A hybrid is probably the only way you will see a substantial improvement over your 31mpg average. I travel over 35 miles on my way to work before I even see a traffic light.![]()

2002 Corolla LE Auto
i get about 265 miles on a full tank of 87 ($44).
i get a little over 300 miles on 89 ($high forty's)
the car is great and really reliable. i goto umass amherst so i got a 2 hour commute every time i come home (pretty often). I also deliver at school to make some money. It hasn't failed me yet.
During the winter it's pretty fun since it's a light car that has no traction control, steering stabil, etc. i just fuck around and "drift" the POS. other times i baby it. I haven't had to fix anything on it yet and if it seems like it's lacking power, just change the oil (i use mobil 1) and it gives a great improvement. it's also really easy to change the oil + filter. i recommend doing it yourself.

did you have any oil burning issues?
I've read on the forums that some 98-02 corollas came with faulty rings from the factory (as a result of toyota's attempt to skin down resistance in the cylinder and increase fuel economy) and by 70-140k miles, the car will burn oil worse than a rich 2-stroker
I checked my oil level today, and to my surprise had to add another 3-1/2 quarts to bring it to the upper mark on the dipstick...I'm going to watch the oil level weekly and see if mine's one of many duds
