so the rear on the 300 is nearing the end of its life. i can flip it and get a bunch more riding out of it but im still gonna need a tire eventually. right now im running a Dunlop Geo something on the front and Vee Rubber something on the rear.
looking through my catalog at work, most of the 140s are DOT legal. not sure if that means that they arent a good off road tire. should i be looking at dropping down to a 130? 120?
right now im eyeballing the 6 days by metzler but they arent cheap.

Pirelli mt16. Fuck dot. Just save the wear for the dirt, and don't go honking on it on the tar.
And my personal fav front is the irc ve33 or 35, whichever the designation is for the front.

I agree with the the MT 16. I was skeptical of such a simple tire. Boy does it work great on the rear. Haven't settled on a front. Really want to try a golden Fatty

Kenda Trakmaster 2 is DOT legal, heavy as hell, wears like iron and seems to work well.
the GoldenTyre GT216 AA Fatty is amazing up front, love it, will buy another. 90/100-21 ... still a big fan of the Motoz Tractionator Enduro out back, 110/100-18. i've run many S/Ts in the past, been testing the I/T this season but like the S/T better. both the Golden and Motoz are DOT legal.
140 rear sounds 'UGE. if you like switchback corners, i'd think about going down in size.

I don't know anyone who has tried the GT216AA front and disliked it. I'm still undecided on the rears. MT16 and Vee rubber 300's are all I've used more than once. I've tried others but nothing seems to work like them in mixed NE conditions. I prefer the Vrub but wouldn't hesitate to spoon on an mt16. I hated the stock geomax at81's. The hybrid trials/ enduro tire didn't work for me either, and a full trials rear is good for most things that I tried, but not good enough to choose it over a v-rubber. Right now I have a GT 216 rear on order to try out.
So the book calls for a 140 but seems that there is a 120 on there now. Im probably gonna stick with that since it seems to be working and theres way more availability in that size. The Vee on the back is a 140 Pro model but im gonna look at that MT16 mentioned.
Installed the new gnarly expansion chamber today. Should run better now. She needs new chain and sprockets but i wont have time before this weekend. Ill do them when i change the tire i guess. Gotta replace the missing subframe bolt that i keep forgetting about.

Last I checked Motorbikes+ had a shelf full of MT16's. I hear they are popular.

Got the pipe installed and decided to take it for a run to work to find a bolt and give it a bath. Made it a few miles and the bike just quit. It turns over easy and it feels like there is compression (i can feel air coming out the exhaust) but she wont fire.
Gonna start with the plug and hope for the best.

Did you check the fuel valve? Vapor-locked tank? Or maybe a sticky carb float.
I'm not very experienced when it comes to dirt tires, but an MT16 was recommended to me by some talented woods guys and I have no complaints. I'll be buying a new one soon and the only reason I'd consider something else is just to get some exposure.

Needle broke? (Happened to me this year.)
Have not, but I've been on Maxxis I/T's front and rear for my last cycle and very pleased with them. Mixed use, mostly woods with mud, log crossings, roots, rocks. They've run pretty well in the bit of sand I've had them in. Decent wear rate.

you're gonna love that Fatty, especially if you ride rocks.
it seems to slide out a little on dry, silty trails (might have been related to my rear sag, just went another step stiffer out back to compensate) but it's been hard to find any faults with it. def won't be going back down to a reg size front.

I can testify that the GT216AA will absorb some brutal hits to save the rim. I feel fortunate that the forks are still on my bike. That the tire holds air and the wheel is round are an unexpected bonus.

I'm in love with the fatty. The only problem I had was it showed that my rear was worn... Lol
With the Tubliss I was only running about 5 psi front and rear and the hook up on the slime covered rocks was great.
The layer of dust on all the rocks is a layer of Vaseline now... Talk about slick...
I won't be going back...
