Exhaust packing material - suggestions for types to use?

Looks like the exhaust can is totally empty on my motard. Didn't realize that stuff just vanished out the pipe like it does....

I'm ordering supplies to re-pack it any suggesting for packing material? I've never done it before but I did a quick google search and it looks like there's 1) bulk fiber 2)fiberglass mat 3) steel wool 4) pre-formed pillow.

I'm not seeing a lot of guidance except that the bulk fiber is the most time consuming and the steel wool / pre-formed pillows are the most expensive, with pre-formed pillows being the easiest. It's suggested that performance will be similar with all.

That said, the expense is pretty negligible ($30 vs. $15) so should I just go with the pre-formed pillows? I don't have a lot of extra time to work on the bike so if it saves half an hour or so that would be great (it's stored at NYST, so I'm likely to get in after 10pm on a friday night and try to put it in then).

I guess one thing is if I buy the bulk packing, can I just "top it off" as it blows out or do you still have to do a full re-pack?

Saw FMF mat packing at Cycle Gear in Woburn, around $10.

I have an EMGO mega-muffler on one of my bikes, the packing just disappears it seems.

I've only used the pillow-type you speak of. It was kind of a pain as in my application you REALLY had to compress the hell out of it to get the baffle back into the can. I needed a second set of hands to help get the baffle back in while I kept the pillow compact enough to be able to fit in the can. I got model specific pack from the exhaust manufacturer too, didn't expect it to be that much of a hassle...

Masking tape wraps help with that. Wrap the packing around, compress and hold it down with a wrap of tape. Move up the pipe a bit and repeat. Then you don't need extra hands when reassembling.

I tried tape, but the packing would just kind of bunch up anyway. It was just way too tight of a fit...

Another vote for the FMF stuff. Been using it for years.
Sometimes it takes some trimming to make it fit. But like a hampster sometimes you need to wrap it tightly with tape before for you stick it in...
