02 YZ 250.
A friend of mine inherited it. Thing hadn't been ridden in years. We changed the fluids, cleaned the air filter, put a new plug in, it started up first kick.
Now I've ridden dirtbikes and such in the past, but always 4 strokes. XR400s, 250s, and a bunch of small bikes. I also ahve had a 4 wheeler since i was like 14, an 02 300ex.
Either way i took this thing for the first rip and new it would be fast, but holy crap, haha.
My friend had little experience on a dirtbike, and he went for a put up and down his street, but never hit the powerband, so he was literally, just putting along in 3rd gear, when he could easily have been in first.
I was surprised at how much compression and how strong this thing ran. It either has a fresh top end, or was just BARELY ridden.
After we get it running, I leave and tell him not to ride the bike alone, don't touch it with out a helmet, and do NOT take it into the trails just yet. Cause there is no way he had the ability to ride a 4 stroke 250, nevermind this beast.
A few hours later i get 2 texts. One from a different friend saying that the kid who got the bike is in the hospital, and one frmo the owner of the bike that just said "the bike is yours"
He ended up taking it out in shorts, and a tank top in front of some friends, hit powerband in first on pavement, and 12-o-clocked it. He did have a helmet on at least....but his arm, right knee, and foot, and hand were just ALL rash.
This was a few weeks ago, and yesterday I offered him a small amount of money for teh bike and he accepted.
Not sure how much i'll drive it, it scares the crap out of me. I have taken it out on the trails behind my house a few times now before i bought it, with a friend driving my 4 wheeler following me, and after an hour or so, I got much more comfortable, but god damn this thing is fast, and the suspension is super harsh in the woods. The pre-load this thing has is unreal, a small blip over a rock, and the thing just sores.
Undecided if i'm going to sell it for the cash, or sell it for a trail bike, cause i don't plan on doing any sort of motocross, but the thing is just so much fun.
I'll have some pics tonight when i pick it up. If anyone is interested in it, let me know, cause i may be selling.

I know, but i also remember that pastrana road a 125 up until he was 18, and him at 18 will be a better rider than i ever will be.
I think i'm just gonna throw it up on craigslist, and if the right offer comes along, sell it, but ride the crap out of it up until then.

let me know how much.

I mean if the bike truly freaks you out a bit then sell it, thats really not fun to have in your head. But I am a 160lb wuss and ride a 250 2stroke...god I love it![]()

It does not TRULY freak me out, and I have stupid amounts of fun riding it. But I know I am no where close to using it to its full potential. I always wanted a dirtbike, but never could decide if i wanted to go with a 4 stroke trail bike cause it is most practical, or if i wanted to get a 2 stroke and have something really fast. I was gonna take a middle route and get a kdx220, but they were really tame and just didn't do it for me. No low end grunt of a 4 stroke, and not the high reving, hold on for dear life like the motocross bikes have.
What makes me want to keep it....
I've taken it out on 3 trips on the trails behind my house. First was for like 2 hours, second was another 2 hour trip, and the third was like a 4 hour trip.
First ride i went down 4 times. 3 of them were just turning around though going really slow, and the bike was on high ground. 1 of them, though, i lost the back end, over corrected, then highsided into a bunch of pine trees, but i was fine. AFter the first day, I was WIPED out.
Second day was MUCH better, i road much better and was much more comfortable, didn't lay it down once.
Third day, we did a bit more trails, and i tackled some stuff I thought I would have trouble with. Some good hills, and some mud. I did fine through everything, and had more fun than any other time, and was absolutely ripping through teh trails compared to my first day, but still slow compared to someone who can actually ride.
I think i'm gonna ride it for a bit and see how it goes...now I just need people to ride with. My 4 wheeler needs a couple hundred it parts cause i let some friends borrow it and it wasn't taken care of properly (my fault cause i ride without a rear skid plate cause i know the quad inside and out, and should have put one on for someone else) but normally I'm down for letting people ride that.
I got miles of trails behind my hosue that we ride. Been caught out there once, but thats it in 7 years of riding.

it appears like you have the experience to handle it and the conscience to respect it...if I were the owner, I would also hold onto it for a little while![]()
I have the experience to go slow when I need to, and to know my limits....but that also used to be my thoughts when i was buying a motorcycle. I was planning on getting a liter bike cause i knew i could drive slow, but after talking to a few experienced riders, I was quickly convinced to get a 600, and I'm glad I have taken their advice.
I was wondering what the case would be in this dirtbike situation, and it seems that I should have fun with it.

i'm not familiar with the '02 YZ250s but generally, a flywheel weight is a cheap and easy way to mellow the power hit and allow you to chug more in the slow stuff.
usually a good mod for an MX bike in the woods/trails. i threw a 13oz on my CR250 and it worked like magic.

pics?
I fall down 4 times per hour when in the woods, never mind how many times per ride. Don't judge your riding by how many get offs you have in the woods, it happens to everyone more often than they like to admitt
From what I've read in the past, the YZ 250 smoker is one of the best MX bikes you can get your hands on for woods riding
Yamaha
Look into pipes for it also. On a 2-stroke, different pipes change the power curve. The FMF Gnarly gives more of a balanced powerband with more low end on most bikes. Do some research and you can ususally find a good pipe to really tune the power to how you ride.
