So I'm turning 40 and had an epiphany. Fix up the old 1986 XR250R that I know can be had for cheap money. It will be like I'm 13 all over again, ripping around on the fire roads and trails around Hampstead NH. It came from NH and had previously been plated. So getting it plated in Ma. wasn't going top be that much of a problem. I figured this would be a place to post up pics of the progress.

for what you're using for, having the ability to take a quick jaunt down the block to fire roads is a huge plus
imho, XR's are reliable fun to begin with...a street plated one is even better!

Nice! Diggin the white, but get rid of those purple frikkin fork guards! What happened to the blue ones???
Any plans to paint the tank?
The thought of ridin down the road & hittin the fire roads is remotivating me to plate the KTM.

The bike looks great, GT! I had a 1986 XR600, and had a blast with it - until it lunched 3rd gear (a common issue with the 85-86 600's). I really like XR's. They are very mellow, compared to more recent offerings, but are quite capable and reliable trail machines.
Looking Good!
Funny I bought this little thing a few years back at the Bettencourt's bike auction. Wasn't planning on buying it but the CR60R was my first 2 real stroke and this thing is mint. I justified buying it by saying to myself that my son can ride it in a few years. lol This little fucker rips with my fat ass on it.

The fork boots look like that in the fluorescent light I think. They were way cheaper than factory parts. The plastics are all getting painted with "fusion" plastic specific paint from a can and have come out pretty good so far. There is a guy on the web that makes the factory orange number plate colors for $35. I'll use those and a headlight restoration kit on the tank to get the old plastic looking good again. The overall plan is to get it to look like original with the kind of hop ups that make it more functional. The spare motor is gonna end up stroked, bored, cammed and ported. The engine in it now is a donor that came out of a bent frame. It ran great right up until it hit a tree and tucked the whole front end. Too bad the old forks were junk as these are original damper rod forks, the cartridge ones would have been nice. I'll keep posting and bring it to bike night in May.

Awesome. I was thinking of getting my first real bike again (1974 MR50 Honda, which they also had at that auction). Those CR60 do scream. Back when they were out i was working at a shop that sold them and a mechanic rode one in the parking lot. Being an adult he was already sitting over the rear fender basically. He hit the throttle, nothing, nothing, nothing, then bam RPM's hit and the power came on. Funniest thing was watching him holding on to the grips and running behind it trying to put the front wheel back down.

Yes that is mud. Its a runner and everything but the final lighting, mirror and horn to get it street legal is finished. The skid plate will be in any day and then the only finishing touch will be the XR's Only muffler after i get it through inspection.
