Ok, I'm looking to get back into dirty riding. I know a kid who has a heavily built 1998 rm125 for sale. He's asking $1000, I've seen it, it's in great shape and starts first kick. The last dirtbike I had was a 1987 rm80. I've been out of the dirt loop for a while.
The only thing I'm kinda worried about is the 2-stroke factor. I'm not so keen on rebuilds every season.
Is there anything common to go wrong with this bike? Is it a fair price? I'll try to talk him down anyway.
Does anyone have one? Likes? Dislikes? Need a dirt riding friend?
THANKS!
Depends on what kind of riding you want to do with it. If you are looking to run some motocross tracks, its a good bike for that. But they can be a bit tricky in the woods with a very peaky powerband; if you are climbing a hill, or just negotiating difficult single track, it can get irritating when it stalls because you aren't full on the power.
Sounds like cheap money, though.![]()
That's a very fair price, especially if it's in the condition you say.
You don't have to rebuilt the engine motor every 3 seconds, especially if you aren't binging it off the rev limiter constantly. A new piston / ring is like $65 bucks and takes 45 minutes to replace.

Ok, thanks foir the input! I think I may be getting it.
I had one that I use to race. I don't agree with highsider. I love my 2-smoker in the trails alot more than my yz426, but that could also have to do with what I am use to. If it has been awhile I think you will have no problem getting use to riding that thing in the trails.
It is an over all good bike. You will need to work on it tho, but that goes for all 2-strokes. mostley just top end a year and change the oil.
for the money thats a great deal. good luck.

I have a KTM 125 I converted to woods duty. It's great fun and I only rebuild it once every year, or so. I ride several thousand miles each year. Don't be scared, buy it and have fun.
On an other note I was thinking of having an NESR Day in the Dirt. It looks like we have a bunch of new dirt riders, so I was thinking of having a day when we can get together and learn some basic dirt skills. Any one up for that????
Yes master I am in. I need to wax on and then whack off.

I miss the dirt. Next week/weekend I'm game for all you can dish out.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
Next weekend for sure! Sign me on.
I think October might have me tied up with work out of state...Not all a bad thing $$$. I may be taking the Dirt bike out to PA with me to get riding in out there? I hope..
