My neighbor and I went riding yesterday in our trails, and I had some gravity issues and ended up on the ground. Not only did I land on a downed tree and now have a huge bruse on my right side/ribs..I landed on a ground bee's nest and got stung on the back.
Today, I decide to do some trail work..dig a few stumps out, remove some problem rocks, and build up some burms in the tight corners. The first location, I move a bunch of rocks and get ready to dig a hole to bury them and create a burm. Yellow jackets nest #1! I pack up and move to another section. As soon as I get to the next spot, I see yellow jackets again? Strike 2! I was close to the third location that needed some attention and as I'm pulling up, I see a grey ball stuck to the side of a tree? Hmm, these ones are black and white.
At this point I said fuck it and was heading back to the house. Crossing the trail, I came up on a burm that I wanted to build up..looked around and didn't see any bees, so i got to work. I must have built 35' of new burm, took out a bunch of stumps and buried a bunch of rocks. There was one last pine stump I wanted to remove on the edge of the trail..not a problem for bikes, but it catches a wheel on the quad. I hook on to it with the kubota and it pops right out...along with the yellow jackets nest that was built under it! Not sure how I didn't get stung, but there were lots of them.
What is it this year that has so many wasps and yellow jackets around? With the number of times I fall off my bike per ride, my chances of getting stung again are pretty high

crazy that you posted this... we've been saying the same thing for the past month or so! both wasps and yellow jackets have built nests under my deck somewhere, which they always do but manageable (sunny, dry, warm wood). my wife was watering flowers 2 weeks ago, just walked out on the deck and they attacked her! foot was swollen up really bad for a good week after. she did nothing to provoke them.
just tonight, one of my dogs walked out the door, across the deck to go take a leak in the grass and all of a sudden starts going after something on his hind leg... i ran down and see a freekin yellow jacket stuck to him stinging him. all he did was walk by.
things are crazy angry this year. need a proper suit to go under my deck and find the nest. usually i can go under and spray from a distance but this year i see yellow jackets and wasps flying into the same areas.
WTF is right. they seem way more pissed off than usual and definitely more concentrated. i tried one of those 'traps' under the deck but it's scored zero so far. i've got one other type to try. foaming out the entry spots did nothing.

Wow...this cannot be a coincidence. There is a huge grey ball with Black/White wasps in it. Looks just like this:
It is hidden in branches that stick out from the sidewalk into the road. I am surprised the kids that run around haven't gotten stung yet but every day I walk by with my puppy...they actually fly around me to "mark" their territory.
How can I destroy the thing without getting stung by 50+ wasps?
*** UPDATE ***
Just found out what type of wasp I have in my neighborhood...
Hornets (Dolichovespula maculata and Vespa crabro)
The so-called bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata), about ¾-inch long, black and white, with white face, is actually a larger yellowjacket species. Its nest is the familiar basketball-size papery oval hanging from tree limbs and sometimes structures. Colonies are relatively small, containing up to 700 wasps. An even larger wasp is the European hornet (Vespa crabro). This is a true hornet, more than an inch long and reddish brown in color with dull orange stripes. Nests occur in trees and in attics and wall voids of structures near forested areas.
This does not seem smart...

Tips & Warnings
* Bald-faced hornets will desert their nest every winter and rebuild in a new location in the spring.
* There is only one queen bald faced hornet in the nest and many female workers.
* Always wear a long-sleeve shirt, long-pants, boots, gloves and hat when killing bald-faced hornet wasps.
* Bald-faced hornet wasps can sting repeatedly.
* Bald-faced hornets are extremely aggressive.
* Many people are allergic to wasp stings. A few people can suffer a fatal allergic reaction when exposed to venom.
* Never break open a bald-faced hornet wasp nest
* Never knock down a bald-faced hornet wasp nest.

they're vicious around here as well this year, finding them EVERYWHERE.
When I landscaped with my uncle back in the teenaged years, we would get those hanging nests at night with a ladder and a large thick trash bag. Just go up and around the branch that's holding it and seal the top..then snip off the branch. Some of the bigger nests like that actually had some value to them for a decoration.
I have 2 yellow jacket nests hanging under my deck as well, and another growing in the soffit of my shed. I'm gonna use my bee suit to get rid of those one day this week.
Sadly, my sting happened after the crash. It wouldn't have been as demoralizing for me if I could say the bee sting caused my crash...wait, maybe it did? haha

The bald faced hornets are nasty little bastards. last year at a bbq a few brave (drunk) guy's decided to try and remove a nest from under the deck. the hornets went nuts. one of the guys wound up getting stung in the face just under his eye. 2 min later he's on the ground with his face swelling and his throat closing from the venom. it got into his system so fast because of the location of the sting. luckily someone there was an emt and had his bag and gave him a shot with an epi pen til an ambulance arrived. it could've been a bad seen............if you dont know your allergic dont screw with them.....
i have every damn bee imaginable building nests in various locations at my house. i had a maaaaasive honey bee colony in my garage wall...im talking a stud width wide and 6 ft tall...layers and layer thick.

Despite never having been allergic to bee venom, I got stung in a vein a number of years ago while mowing the lawn, had an allergic reaction and spent the night in the hospital. There was a hornets nest in our tree out back. So we proceeded to put on heavy clothes, waited until dusk, sprayed down the nest with gasoline and lit it up. It went pretty fast, and there was no angry swarm trying to kill us.

Our condo is right on the woods and we've definitely noticed a larger population of all types of bees. Not just hornets and wasps, but also pollen carrying bees.
On any given day, there are dozens of bees circling Annalisa's flower garden. Whereas lat year at the same time, the numbers were much smaller.
decided to skip the Tyvek suit and mask... hired someone coming on Friday. they're way too pissed off for me to fuck with them![]()

any bee nests must be taken out at night, thats when they are all back in the nest.
I am a little nervous to take care of this myself but I feel like I need to do something soon since there are a lot of kids in my neighborhood and who knows if they have seen it. I may have to "be a man" and take care of this this weekend.
I've found a paintball gun to be the best way to take down a nest. Used it many times for this, always extremely effective. Allows you to keep your distance, inflict irreparable damage, kill a decent number of the offending insect, and usually also kill the queen.

On a serious note, pyrethrins are natural and made from flowers, they work really well and are safe around pets and kids. http://www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/pyrethrin.htm

I'm going after mine tonight! Picked up 4 cans of raid foam and plan on suiting up with the honeybee suit. 2 under the deck need to go, and one in the eve of my shed.
I had them pissed last night, I tossed a peice of firewood out the sliding glass door and onto the deck, and had the outside flood light on. They came out and instantly went for the light. I shut the light off and they were then slamming into the glass doors from the light inside the house. There must have been 75-100 yellow jackets trying to get in

This fcking thread jinxed me. I was riding today and I have a quarter size hole in my pants. Somehow a bunch of wasp entered thru that hole while I was riding and stung the shit out of my leg. I crashed the bike and rolled hoping to kill them all.

After installing a new door last week I had siding to install. Second cut on a second piece and all hell broke loose. Directly above me was the nest. Miter box set them off. Ran like hell, lost my phone from my apron for a bit in the flower garden. They were adding about 1 layer of nest a day. These bastards are no where's near Union Labor. It is at a camp on a lake and the owner had no idea it was there. I'd like my check so I let him know.

I finally had a chance to mow my lawn this past friday and guess what happens...i mow over a hole and i got stung by a bee...didnt know where it was and what happens next...mow over it again and got stung again. So my right ankle area is swollen. Fantastic...track day on monday.
