well, my birdge uses real styrofoam... and real glue too, you know, the kind that gets so hard after a while that it is stronger than the two materials it is bonding.
So, is Dippity Doo-dah out?

I cry BS!
Do a search on eBay for Arai helmets. Most of the "discount" helmets on eBay are those with the fancy squid graphics that people don’t want anymore; style from two or three years ago.
Clearly the majority of helmets sold in the US are solids.
The reason we see so helmets on eBay with graphics on them is that people don’t want to pay MSRP for a helmet with a tired-old graphic. That is the reason they get discounted (because people don’t want them), not that they are about to “expire”. If that were true, we’d see a shit load more helmets on eBay with solid colors.
Arai is a marketing machine with few rivals (Rolex comes to mind – a Rolex really isn’t that great of a watch, but most people think they’re the nads). They have been able to convince many people (me included - a loyal Arai customer for the last +20 years), that there helmets are the best, and that they can justify such high premiums. Is an Arai helmet over $ 600.00 “better” than a HJC AC-11? No fuckin way.
This five year BS is just one more marketing ploy.
PS - My next lid is going to be an AC-11 from Europe. No more snell for me.

I supose it's possible that glues and resins in the helmet liner could somehow leach out of the liner, and attack the styrofoam. And dont forget about the monkey's. They are evil fucks.

styrofoam last forever if it's not exposed to ultraviolet light or chemicals

and dont we normally ride when its sunny out? hmmmmmmm.
if it was a marketing ploy then why would SNELL be the one saying it? they are a non-profit organization, what do they have to gain?
styrofoam DOES compress though. Can we all agree on that? so over time and use wouldnt the styrofoam start to compress making the helmet "too big" for your skull. kinda like when some fat head borrows your helmet (or hat for that matter) and when you get it back now it doesnt fit right.

gasoline & noxious fumes ARE chemicals, the styrofoam portion is NOT exposed to sunlight unless you rip the liner out and let it sit upside down
you would actually let someone borrow your helmet? do you share underwear too?
And isn't the Snell foundation funded my helmet manufacturers?
the only thing I concern myself with with regard to a helmet is
1. does it FIT
2 is it DOT approved
there are no states that require Snell, I don't give a shit about tracks, I don't ride on them
my Arai, is 6 years old and has over 100,000 miles, I have replaced the cheek pads once, but, I will probably replace the helmet this fall, I think my next helmet will be a flip face snowmobile helmet

i can see the styrofoam in my helmet without removing the liner. and maybe your right.... direct sunlight doesnt happen that much to the inside but it does experience sun time when you wear it albeit on the outside shell it still gets hot. now people like you and i may not leave our helmets hanging off our mirror or sitting on the tank or hanging off a footpeg when not in use and OUR helmets may last 7-10 years. BUT some people might not do such things and their helmets may not hold up as well as one that is properly taken care of.
sharing helmets and sharing underwear?
talk about two ends of the spectrum
there are no states that require airbags either but people want those in their cars so why not get something that has passed anumerous amount of rigorous tests for added safety? if you dont care about SNELL why care about DOT? my concern would be "what is it about this helmet that SNELL wouldnt pass it?"
and as far as i know SNELL was started by a guy that wanted to helmets through certain safety tests after his friend died and the helmet failed to save his melon. how true that is i dont know.
you wear whatever the fuck you want. SNELL, DOT ,BSB CNN MSNBC whatthefuckever! if you want to wear a snowmobile helmet on your bike then why not wear leathers on your snowmobile?

DOT is the legal requirment
you really don't see the similarity between sharing a helmet and sharing dirty underwear?

If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.
whoe ever started Snell doesn't matter, the foundation is funded buy the manufacturers, why because it's in their best interest financially to get people to buy new helmets on a regular basis, the helmet manufacturers have their pocket book in mind, no doubt, a snell helmet might be marginally more protecteve in certain situations, but it's my understanding that they are also more dangerous in certain situations too. there are many dot only helmets that are dot only not because they didn't pass a test, but because they were never submitted to snell for for testing, snell foundation is a voluntary testing that costsOriginally posted by SVRACER01

on the otherhand, development of DOT regulations are not paid for by the helmet manufacturer and the thrust behind DOT is not profit for a private company, it's public safety only, funded by taxpayers

It's from 3 or 4 years ago. Like I said, I used to think like that.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
"Arai is a marketing machine with few rivals (Rolex comes to mind – a Rolex really isn’t that great of a watch, but most people think they’re the nads)."
Actually Rolex make a fantastic watch, just as Arai make a fantastic helmet. If you want to save money though, buy an HJC and a Seiko and both will work just as well at performing their intended function.
I find Arai quality and function to be worth the money. Others disagree and have good reasons for doing so. Fair enough, don't buy one.
The (arguably) best products always command a premium price that is typically not commensurate with their comparitive goodness. This applies across all segments of all markets.
Regarding the five year rule, anyone who thinks that's really too often to change a helmet needs to ride more. Five years is a very long time and a lot of the sport riders I see can't even keep a bloody motorcycle for half that time.
Hey UnionJackass,
Didn't I see your bike at Moto last Sunday?
My whole beef with this argument was the claim that if a helmet sat on a shelf for five years, that it's as good as useless. I do not, and probably will not, ever believe that. Now where are my running shoes...
I agree, I need to ride more, 30,000 miles a year is not enufOriginally posted by unionjackass

When I first started this thread, it was posted as a question. I do not know the answer. Everybody has there opinion and I am not sure that anybody who has replied here is an authority on the subject. You can't be wrong for your opinion, but don't shoot down someone elses because you may not agree. We are retaliating back and forth with opinions. Believe what you want and buy your helmets accordingly. Some of us shouldn't even waste our money on helmets as they aren't really protecting anything of value.
