lookin into it... my bike is comin up on 10k miles & the chain wasn't exactly babied before or after i got it... it could probably stand replacing, and while i'm spending all this money on repairing my bike from my suprise dismount in the sand a week & 1/2 ago i might as well go all out![]()
so.... where should i start? I'd like to spend as little as possible, but still get a great quality product w/a good name/reputation... i know there's deals out there & i'm a big bang-for-the-buck kinda guy
Mark, what was that site again, the one you told me about yesterday?u said a whole kit was only like $150... that sounds good to me

EDIT: for $189 w/ a DID x-ring this looks tastey![]()

btw... the other question is... do i really NEED it?.... probaby not since all i do is a little spirited street riding & occational track day.... but why the hell not, eh?
i also want a chain that's low maintanance... i'm horrible when it comes to that stuff![]()

I wouldn't put a 520 on a bike for street use. It won't last.
The 520 conversion is great for a race bike due to the chains lower weight and rolling resistance. Plus, the lighter sprockets help save a pound or two.
However, what kills a chain is all the stopping and starting. A race bike only really has one start, and he's off. Where as a streetbike doing light to light puts a lot more stress on a unit.
Buy a nice, high quality RK, DID or whatever 530 0-ring chain and keep it clean and lubed. It will last many years.
On the street, the 520 may not even make a season.
Putting his hands in the air, like he just doesn't care.

I noticed exactly what Dave mentioned after putting a 520 'kit' on a street going R6 - wore much quicker than the OE setup. Also, the chain no longer lined up with the grooves in the chain buffer, which would cause the chain to deflect if it weren't modified.
A DID chain & OE sprockets have always been good for about 15k miles on the bikes I've kept for that long. Maintenance consisted of a spray & wipe w/WD40 after every couple of hundred miles.
Tried an RK once -- seemed like it stretched after every ride.

There is no reason to put on a 520 setup on for the street. K.O. hit it right on the nose with some reasons why not to.

Definately spend the $$ on an X-ring or O-ring chain, they last longer and will be more forgiving to lazy maintainence schedules because the rings help reep the pivot points cleen, you should still clean and lube them often! You'll probably never break a chain, but the damage it could cause to your bike and you isn't worth saving a few bucks on the chain.

aight thanks for the heads up guys... i just figured that my OEM driveline is getting somewhat close to the end of it's useful life & figured i might as well upgrade if i'm gonna replace it....
if i'm going to sacrifice that much longevity for such a small difference in acceleration etc. I'd rather go w/ something that'll go a whole season or two... and for me that'll be around 10-15k miles

Funny..I got 4 years and over 17,000 miles on my AFAM 520 chain kit..what are you doing wrong?
And I don't hold back either....
My 520 conversion just came in. I ordered it before this thread so I'll let you know what I get. 26,000 out of the stock chain and sprockets......yeah it's about time to replace 'em.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
I have a DID VM 520 110 links
all put together.
rated to 1000cc's
Yours for $120 cut down with another masterlink
This "deal of the century" is debatable, next town over and the chain is already in a continuous loop. Could be a problem.

Suf Daddy.
1 reason to put a 520 chain on is so that you can add it to the list of things you wasted money on to make you sound cool when you talk about it!!
Just kidding but seriously no need to go to a 520 on the street!!

I don't know crap about crap, he said you want a '520' i said 'huh?' he ordered it. Is that chain brandy new? KB, that enough links for me?Originally posted by rmbbikes

Yeah...and when you got a TLR that's as slow as mine, you need all the help you can get.....Originally posted by bigred875
pppffftttt its tlr though![]()

But seriously, it is lighter, it doesn't put as much stress on the countershaft and sprocket, it's good for another 1/2 HP to the rear wheel, and it lasts just as long as a 530. it's TLR proven!
So if you are blowing up a 520 chain prematurely, you don't have it adjusted correctly, or haven't kept it (like any chain), in good shape.
But think of this also....Race bikes put more load on a chain than running in street trim, and if they are known to fail, why do they make kits for street bikes anyway?
So to end my argument...always ran them, always will....![]()
