Advice needed on consideration for new chain on GSXR

I was cleaning the chain on my GSXR today and notice one of the o-rings started to fray and there is a tiny piece of rubber o-ring that is sticking up off that particular chain link. It doesnt appear to be leaking anything but it had me wondering. The bike has the original sprockets and chain- 2001 GSXR 750 with 16k miles on it and 7 track days.

The rear sprocket is in excellent shape- no signs of wear on the teeth and I clean and lube the chain regularly. Is this something to be concerned with? I am doing TTD on 4/18 and NJMP TTD in early May.

Can the chain just be replaced and not the sprockets?

    Any advice is appreciated!

Just get a whole new kit... I got mine for about $150 at sum of all parts and did a 520 conversion and went +5 in the rear. You may want to stick with 530 though.

Unless you have links that are binding, just run it as you normally would without any worry.

I only say this because I know this bike is absurdly clean and extremely well taken care of which means I know you keep up on the basics such as chain care.

EDIT: Replace chain and sprocket in sets or risk more issues.

I can check it out for you at the weekend if you want.
I wouldnt worry if it is just a frayed O ring in the short term.

I would replace the chain as a minimum before the trackday. If you can't do that then make sure you keep the chain clean and lubed and remove any o-rings that are falling off.

If you can afford to, replace the whole sprocket and chain set. As others have already pointed out, it's good practice. Keep the sprockets as spares if they are still useable.

    Wirelessly posted (HTC EVO "DROID" : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Sprint APA9292KT Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

It's not gonna leak anything. Run it. If you really want, you could cut out the link and replace it with a master link with new o rings.

I think the chain is wearing out more from you cleaning it than actually riding!

Run it till it makes loud clunking noises. Then replace it.

I took an old rusty chain that I got for Awesome one time cleaned it up on a bench grinder wire wheel and got another 15k out of it before I sold it to some kid from VT that totaled the bike a month later.

Check the wear using the rear sprocket pull test.
Try to pull the chain off the back of the rear sprocket. (with bike off of course)
If you can see daylight between the links and the sprocket, then you need to replace the chain and sprockets.

Re: Advice needed on consideration for new chain on GSXR

Just buy a new one...ya cheap bastard!!

I notice o-rings coming off the r6 chain last year (that's right, plural) right before the first track day. Didn't have time to change it out, but was worried it would snap at some point. (didn't tell Jeff about it until after the track days were done )

But then ordered a set when I got home. DID!! Why chance it. Always heard it's better to replace the chain and both sprockets as a set, too due to wear. Swapped to a 520 set-up, as well.
