Exclamation Need advice regarding dropped bikes. [Kind of Urgent]

    Hello Everyone,

I seem to have a decent deal at hand right now for a bike but I'm not sure as the owner says he dropped the bike while it was on a standstill. The tank has a dent in it and there are some scratches on the side he dropped it (seemed like they were only cosmetic). In addition to that the chain moves up and down about 3" and the tires might have to be changed soon. The bike has around 17K miles on it. Please let me know as to what to do . I am almost set on buying this bike today.

Sit on the thing. If the bars and the front wheel line up, and the seat doesn't feel crooked when the bike is straight up and down, the seller might be telling the truth. Without more info or pics, I can't help anymore.

I checked the bars and the front wheel. Based on the scratches it seemed like the bike was definitely on a standstill. I was wondering if this would impact the bike's performance in any way.

Sorry for being so vague the bike is an sv650. I didn't get pics (probably should've ) It starts perfectly well. No noises. No leaks. Lights are fine. Not too old owner maybe 40.

Buy it, if the price is right a couple of scratches from a tipover won't mean shit.

correct. Check the radiator. If there were no framesliders it could be dented or damaged.

Why are you set on buying the bike today? SVs are some of the most common bikes out there, its not like you'll never find another. If its because the price is too good to pass up, there is probably a reason for that.

    Many reasons.

    1. Good deal.
    2. Yes many 650s in the market but most of them are far away and I don't have a ride
    3. I only have weekends as I work 12 hours a day during weekdays.
    4. Anyone who tried to purchase a bike on CL will know about the kind of people you have to deal with. One guy wanted me to just take his bike with his plates .. and that he would "mail me the title later"
    5. I've been looking for a while now.

FWIW, I can understand where you're at. I looked at SVs for a while and was disappointed at how beat most private sale examples were.

Come to think of it, that seems to be common for most used bikes.

No problem. You could have just told him you'll mail the check after the title arrives in the mail. Seems like an easy going guy, I'm sure he'd understand.

Without knowing what year it is or what a "good deal" is, know that fixing that cosmetic damage can cost hundreds of dollars. The price should reflect this, especially considering the mileage is not low. the first DL650 I bought had been dropped at a stop sign and replacing the scratched "stuff" was $350.

Lord knows, you wouldn't want to take your time, and maybe find an absolutely pristine 2008 S that has low mileage and hasn't been dropped....

17k chain moves 3", prolly worn out original chain or seller woulda likely mentioned a new one

plan on chain & sprockets as well as tires, that'll add $500
