exactly. a bike won't do anything without someone on it.

Definitely get to him early so that you can get the right mindset ingrained in him before he starts some bad habits that will get him into trouble or even worse...get hurt.

Re: Anyone ever get a bad vibe from a bike?

My 22 year old son will soon have his first bike, a 2000 Triumph Sprint RS that we are fixing up together. I bought it in pieces for $500, salvage title and I've known 5 of the 6 previous owners. I had bought one new and he put some 22,000 miles on it riding pillion with me from 2000 to 2003. He knows what the bike can do.

I've already bought him new IXS jacket, pants, Five (brand) gloves, and given him my old but good Sidi Vertebrae boots. I'll be paying for the MSF basic course. He's paying for all the parts the bike may need, and a new Shoei Quest or similar helmet.

He has promised to (and asked ) to ride with only me "until I feel comfortable", said he. I told him he rides with me until long after that! When he drove me down to the dealer to pick up my new bike, he told me he wanted a new or used Bonneville or perhaps Thruxton. There were new GSX-R600's, 750's and 1000's there, also cruisers, tourers, Street Triples, Speed Triples, Daytona 675's, V-stroms and more. He gravitated toward those two without any prompting from me.

I think he's showing signs that he could be one of the more level-headed beginners out there.

My first streetbike was a 06 cbr600rr. Looking back I would have become a better rider faster but before I got my bike I didn't know shit about them. I didn't know the differences from a 650 to a 600 or a 250 to a 1000. All I knew was I wanted a "small bike" to start on. Come to find out a 600 is actually a whole lot of bike. It is what it is, live and learn. Let people make there own mistakes to some degree, proper gear is my best advice.

At the same time a high revving 600 isn't too bad to on the learner I don't think. My R6 basically made zero power down low in the revs where I had it most of the time. He would get himself into much more trouble with a torquier motor IMO. As he gets more comfortable he can bring the revs higher where there is increasingly more power. Also, It's pretty damn hard to do a power wheeley in any gear besides first, so I don't think there's a chance that he'll loop it.

I can agree with that. Stay safe, keep it in 6th? New safety-sammy slogan?

id have to say, with what you stated, that's awesome parenting on your part. i could have a puppet show with a musical montage in between sets to try and get a point across to the little knot-head, and he still wouldn't listen.

I think i'll pound the "stay safe, stay sixth" into his head. Easy to remember one syllable words should do it, I'll convince him the exhaust sounds more like a "race car" when he's chugging along.

My key to survival? I found NESR and started doing group rides early... It quickly showed me just how little skill and experience I really had. Get him on here, get him on some group rides, bring him up to the track to watch some racing & maybe do a track day.

Very similar for me, I started out on a 1000 and who knows where I would have wound up if I hadn't of been riding with Expat. He kept my youthful exuberance to go fast stupidly, in check, and introduced me to track riding. I have friends that ride now, and some of the crap they do scares the hell out of me just to hear. It's all about training and the right influences when you start out. Not so much the bike.

my first wasa 92 katana 600
then , the 600 was not a ton of power compared to Now. I think like 80HP versus 110ish?

If I started in this time frame, I would be way better off with a 500 ninja or something.
When I was 18, i thought I knew it all, could do anything , we all did.

Ride with him as much as possible, have him take a MSF course and hopefully he will find some good folks to hang with.

I was at a shop once and over heard the salesman tell a kid to buy the GSXR1000 over the 600 because in 6 months he would be bored with it. The kid said, " i told you i never rode before right?" me and my buds spoke to the kid outside and told him to buy a used bike cause he was going to drop anyways then in a year or two buy a new bike if he still was into it. also told him the sales guy was trying to kill him, 1K? really not cool

Same with me. Great bike to learn on. Has enough power to satisfy your needs, but not enough to be unforgiving.
