    Wirelessly posted (HTC EVO "DROID" : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Sprint APA9292KT Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

funny how you need a license to:
Drive (a multitude if vehicles car, bike cdl, boat etc)
    Hunt
    Fish
    Marry
    Carry a gun
    Run a business
And I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of but, no license to have kids. Something that requires more responsibility than all those combined. And yet anyone can do it.

I like the idea for new drivers. We just had 4 teens die in the next town over, including a friend's son. A fifth was in critical for two weeks. Hit a tree sideways at 80-90. Kids have no fear and almost as little skill.

I nearly rolled a car at 30 mph. My sister totalled one at 40.

Speed is not the bigger issue. Limiting speeds by technology like this is akin to applying a band-aid over a gaping flesh wound when a tourniquet is what is really needed.

There will always be freak accidents with some at low speed, but if those kids had been doing 55 rather than 90, they would have never gone airborne and hit the tree. No matter how you look at it, if you are traveling at a high rate of speed your chances of getting killed are much greater if you loose control. I think electronic speed limiters are a good idea for teen drivers. There's no reason their cars should be able to do 90.

We'll have tgo agree to disagree. I much prefer education in attempt to mitigate risk rather than electronic nanny.

If I was the kid in question my first action would be try to disable the device somehow.

55 is still a HIGH speed crash. So isn't 30. Yes, the risk of death gets higher when more speed is involved, but the risk of severe injury is still there. I'd much rather attemp to influence the broader danger to teen driving than TRY to control a smaller segment.

How much I oppose safety legislation is hard to express. It is going to be the downfall of this country. Oddly, the more safety regulations they put in place, the more extreme sports get at the periphery. It's just that your average guy can't can't have nearly as much fun anymore...

Did I mention that safety legislation is to blame for the housing bust, failing schools, runaway medical costs, and many other failures making America a less obvious choice for the best place to live?
