So it was the ground.. 😊
Now that you identified the problem I would, when time allows, trace that wire that should be ground back through the harness until you discover why it is no longer ground. Sometimes in factory harnesses the ground has many junction points and it is possible one may be corroded or coming apart and could lead to more odd electrical issues in the future.
Suzuki TL1000S wiring harness are notorious for this type of thing. Lucky me I happen to own one.......
