I also had a Versys for a few months. It was very comfortable and worked very well, it just didn't really do it for me.

Lightness not found. The F650GS (which has a 19" front compared to the 21" on the F800GS) is the closest.

I rode them all before I bought my second V-Strom. I wound up spending $1,500 to upgrade the forks and rear shock on an 09 DL650A.

The bike you are thinking about might exist - you just can't buy it until November. 2012 V-Strom. But it is also heavier than the singles.

    Review.

    :IWS:

The KTM line fits your needs

I didn't want to spend the big moneys so:::

    Poor man's HYPER the Original

    VSTROM 1K DL1000

    95 HP
Tall all day comfort knock out 500 mile 2 lane days
    Best on Little roads
Go anywhere happy on dirt and limited off road
    Hang stuff and go touring

She's like my big gawky fun girl

If you throw $2000 in goodies she'll run with anything. Yes a lot but you can get a nice version for under $5000 to begin with. If you like the FZ1 I think the 650 to anemic

I couldn't find a DL1k that wasn't beat to shit for $5k. But I agree, it fits the bill too.

My last was a Bandit 1200. I don't miss the power, not at all. Not yet anyway.

Interested in trying out my KLR?

Just like the DR, but a bit more road oriented. Still no rocketship, but I can hang with anyone on group rides with it.

Already mentioned, but would reiterate. Duke 690 if you could find one or the Aprilia Dorsoduro (750) - a one or two year old one should be significantly cheaper than new

8k miles, fueling issues presumably fixed with after market FI module, givi bags... all for <$5k. Run, do not walk. Bring cash and a trailer.

Wasn't on CL when I was looking in May or June.

'03 has smaller accessory cache to pick from though; different windscreen/fairing bits and stuff. All redesigned for '04.
All I found were 02's with 35k that didn't have a clean bit of plastic on them. Or bikes that wouldn't even pass inspection.. and had rust. It was kinda bleak.

Strom 650. Cheap to acquire, cheap to maintain, great motor, suprisingly good handling, comes ugly from the factory so you don't mind a tip-over here and there...

    Sarcasm my man.

The "it's what I know" bit is real though. Never ridden any of that European stuff you guys are talking about. Maybe they're worth the extra.
