and you can ride my F800ST anytime you want...
If "practical" is what she's after, she wouldn't be shopping for motorcycles
My feeling on practical bikes: They do many things well, but none of them great. None of those "I'm not really sure what I am" bikes for me. If I'm going to be on an upright bike, it's going to do at least one thing really great... F800GS? That's more my style. Tuono or Monster? Yes please.
Know what I mean?

If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.
I didn't notice the Streetfighter in the discussion. This bike does it all...kick ass power and performance...sexy looks...comfort. My 1098 version would be too tall for you, but the 848 version is due. That's the one to look at, as it will be lower. Monsters are nice, but the Streetfighter is faster/sexier. You might consider the mid-range Hyper also. Lower seating, and tons of fun. That's a "do-it-all" bike as well.

I find the Street Triple R to be very versatile. Light, fast, totally reliable, easy to service. I went up a tooth on the front sprocket, it's still plenty fast and you're not shifting all the time. The OGIO tail bag expands and can carry enough for an overnight or two, and there's a little extra tool storage under the seat. If you're shopping for a used one, *be sure* that it has the latest regulator/rectifier, production changed in late 2010. And stick with the "R" version, for sure.
+1 on Great Bay.
With OGIO tank and tailbags (from MotoMarket, of course):

hey everyone.. paul and i are super torn... no kenn money is not an issue, pauls truck will be paid of this spring that things like a mortgage... literally lol i guess im holding off because im not completely sold yet ona bike... maybe just really love my sv... a idea paul and i were tossing around is maybe keeping our svs and maybe getting gen 1 track bikes. Not alot of bikes can compete with how comfy my sv is in my opinion... now if only they kept making SVs
i don't know if you've eliminated dual sports but i had a dr200se for a little while and i loved riding around downtown providence in it. when i was in the south i'd be riding home from work and just cut across a field or whatever if i wanted to which was pretty fun. i had to get rid of it to get something i do highway commuting on and couldn't afford both otherwise i'd have kept it. it was so light and easy to turn around if i made a wrong turn (asian). i could do highway for a short time if i needed to but it got a little scary as you approached 70 with the knobbies. i'm only 5' tall and it was perfect for my height
If you can get over the weight of the 09+ R1's, they are loads of fun to do some serious saddle time in.
I was really hung up on getting a Ducati 848 for a while because they are beautiful bikes. The more i read about them though they sound like it would really only be fun on a track and to show off. I like the extra power that a 1k bike has, but they generally are heavier and don't handle quite as well as a 600. Then I looked at all the info about the gsxr 750 and that its basically a 600 wih a bit more power. I really like that idea and they'rr supposed to be real comfy too. Anyways that is the next bike I think I want a 2006+ gsxr 750. Haven't tested one yet, but on paper it looks the best to me. (2006+ because I like the body style).
I have a monster and it is a ton of fun and with the proper seat you can do 300-400 mile days. It is sporty, comfortable and is designed for us vertically challenged peeps. Also, coming from an SV, you will love the twin.
