Let's just say it's something relatively minor: battery, solenoid, etc., and the mileage is reasonable. Would that be a decent price?

I would say the price it's at is probably a good enough deal to take the chance. Maybe spin the motor by hand when you get there to make a final call but I would be comfy paying $2500 for it as is.

It’s at least 1/2 price of a running one. I saw one of those bikes at the Barber Museum with over 200k mi on the odo which makes me think it’s something simple.

Agreed, seems strange - desirable bike/year at a decent price with title, looks to be in decent shape with a bunch of photos. Makes me think there's something wrong that you won't notice until you actually see it in person

FB market seems to be in an odd place at the moment. Bike listed decently below book, getting nothing but crazy lowballs or horrible dumb trade offers.

How is that different than any other time?

That's been my exact experience forever on Marketplace. Nobody is out there hungry for a fair deal. They want a smokin deal.

Either drop the price to move it quickly, or wait for the right buyer to come along. Nothing secret about it.

And "book" value is often out of touch with reality. Because the book isn't there waiting to hand you cash, only buyers are.

In my case, I'm basing 'book' on what bikes are going for at auction to dealers in the past month, and while I'm used to normal FB Marketplace shenanigans it feels way worse than in the past.

Good running 250 motors are getting pricey. Probably 1500 just for that. He has a really nice exhaust on it too, probably an easy grand. Even a trashed ex250 donor is gonna run you $500 and the tank will probably be leaking so another few hundo for a replacement. $2500 is a bargain just for parts.

If he got it for (say) 1800 after driving 6 hours round trip, is dealing with getting a new title, and flipping it for 2500 without getting to enjoy it, he's either not a very good flipper, or he found something wrong with it.
