"We intend to take the four Japanese head-on. We did not intend to build a motorcycle like Ducati does or KTM does. We wanted to build a mainstream motorcycle," says Pieter de Waal, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA.

amazing.... Anyone here have one?
What so far amazes me is the price. Within a few hundred euros of the current R1 was the last details I heard on that. Given how EU/US prices scale weirdly, I'd hope for the same over here!
I'd give my left nut for one of these though :
Bmw R1 - fastest boxer that never was. Liquid cooled 1000cc flat twin, Desmo valve train, 360 lbs dry.

What the hell is with BMW Moto styling. Half 600RR, half futuristic shark bike thingy...
Those headlights are hideous. They make the whole front end look goofy as hell. Somebody on another forum commented that they make it look like the bike's wearing an eye patch, and he's right.

Asymmetric headlights are the only signature BMW styling left at this point. Going with a purely conventional design (forks, chain, engine config), they had to keep something (BMW fugly).
I still like it though and I suspect that people that might buy it, want it to be recognizable as a BMW from a distance. So that should accomplish that.
Is there any great compelling reason to buy a BMW sport 1000 over the Japanese offerings (maybe 3 warranty), except to be a little different.

Plus, whatever lights your fire really. Lets face it, motorcycle buying is rarely a purely logical/rational decision. Emotion comes into it a lot - and for purely that reason, I'd go for the s1000rr over the equivalent supersports.
Practical? Hardly, but go with what moves you
