hey guys,
just bought a new gear/chain set for my bike and was wondering which chain tool i should get? ive only had experience popping off the retaining clip on dirt bike chains but never the rivet type the street bikes use so im pretty lost as to which tool i should buy. obviously i dont need the "snap-on" of chain tools but i dont like spending money on crap tools either. i figured it would take a shop 3 hours to regear, and put a chain on so i think buying the chain tool and doing it myself would be cheaper.

RK Chain Tool.
It's easy to use and heavy duty. I've had no problem breaking chains and pressing master links with it.
I've done multiple chains without a problem. I don't even bother dremeling off the mushroom on the links... just press them out.

I used the motion pro chain tool, the high end one that does it all, pretty comparable to the RK model I think. It worked slick.
I went slow with it, I pressed the plate on little at a time and took the tool off and made sure the master link still moved feely...I then did the same when I set the rivet. Go slow and take your time and make sure the master doesn't bind up. If you over do it, well a new master is pretty cheap.
You probably won't have any problems. I had never done it before so I was nervous but it worked out good
for you guys saying your using the motion pro tool is it this guy?

+1000 to motion pro, you wont have to buy another.
If all else fails, Lean more....
That's the tool I borrowed from my fathers friend.
Different sized pins and plates, plus as you see on the site replacement parts are readily available.
definitely worth the price...I noticed most of those chain tools are priced about the same, 80-90 bucks...motion pro lists it as 94 but if you shop around you can get it shipped for that price, probably a little cheaper.
You could get the RK tool shipped for 90 from motomummy but the RK doesn't look as nice.

I have an RK chain tool... I haven't used it yet, but from what I can tell compared to some other ones I looked at, it's tits.

I have the Motion Pro kit (the one Catch linked). Works fine, no complains so far.
My RK has done numerous chains with only one issue.
The breaker pin needs to be lubed before the first time you use it or it will shatter.
Other than that, it's been very reliable so far.
