ok so my brother just bought a 1990 fzr 600 and the gas tank looks like it is starting to rust. I drained it and i can hear stuff rattling around...sounds like sand.... and the fuel filter is clogged as hell...
What are my options?
leave it and keep changing the fuel filter?
get that coating stuff..if so does anyone know where I could send it to?
or look for a used on on ebay with potentially the same issue?

Pour a gallon or so of laquer thinner into the tank (drain the gas first) and put in a few marbles (glass ones). No rocks or metal ball bearings as you don't want a spark.
Shake it up for a while and that should loosen most of the buildup.
Do this a couple of times and you should be good to go.
Take the petcock off and remove any plastic or rubber screens in it as the laquer thinner will melt them. Put the petcock back on without the screen and leave it in the 'off' position before you pour in the laquer thinner.
derek
you are da man!! I'll try that....that sounds good as it doesnt seem to be that bad yet...
sounds like it's going to be a noisey and painful (for your ears) projectOriginally posted by bigred875

Here is another suggestion
Ebay:
Get a YZF600 tank.....
R6 Seat and Tail Section Conversion
Bring the FZR back to the Future
I did the Seat and Tail on my FZR
Couldn't afford the tank conversion at the time
But it makes the seat fit nicer and gives you a true steel tank

around how much do ya think the whole project would cost?
Tough call on Price
I could be a while to acquire all of the items
on Ebay at rock bottom prices.
It took me a while, but I did it over the winter
I forget what I paid for everything
I would have to guess...
Well under $200 (both seats, tail, undertail, brk lite)
But that does not include the YZF Tank
Not an easy project, but well worth it

definately take care of that asap bro. I know all about rust in the tank, it cost me over a month of riding this year, back when it was nice in March.
Once that starts its gonna get all up in the carbs then its all over. Mine was covered through the dealership, but a friend had the same issue on his bike and he had to drop 1300 to get the carbs rebuilt and the tank done.
ya def. a winter project..he is gonna start lookingOriginally posted by cexley

ken - ya I already have the gas tank off and will do the thinner thing and there is a feul filter right after the petcock so I figure the worse that will happen is he'll be changing the filter a lot before the winter..lol
i have seen that kreem stuff cause more harm then good....imo not worth the effortOriginally posted by Paul_E_D
While you're at it, why not just Kreem the tank? It will last a few more years at least with the inside coated... Then just find a new tank at your leisure...
tanks for these bikes are cheap...
