****I HAVE YET TO GO LOOK AT THIS BIKE*****
my buddy tells me his SV reaks of gas. then he tells me the airbox has oil in it. i tell him to take off the oil fill and see if it smells like gas. he says it does. i understand how this happens. the floats stick and dump gas down the cylinders and it ends up in the crankcase. what i dont get is how this happens since the bike has a vacuum petcock. the amount of gas in the float bowls shouldnt be enough to fill the crankcase enough to have oil carryover to the airbox. unless of course this has been happening for a while.
any ideas of what i should be looking into? im heading over after work today to scope it out.

failed petcock? altered petcock?
Maybe not as bad as you think? If he isn't savvy enough to figure it out, a little gas smell goes a long way, so even if it's two carb bowls of gas it's still going to stink.

Gas cap is blocked. Recent hot/humid weather pressurises guel and it blows by petcock and float valves. Fills up bowls and overflows into intake and past rings. Oil level is probably double what it should be with gasoline now in it.

Take out gas cap and you will see the vent holes. Use brake cleaner or seafoam and compressed air to clean them out.
Take off the tank remove petcock thingy open it up and clean it out and massage the cone shaped ring on the vaccum punger viola problem solved. Oh drain the gasoline drenched oil. Replace with cheapest shittiest oil you can find d run it. Wait 20 mins check oil level.

I clamp my fuel line from the tank with a hemostat (got the bike that way from the previous owner, and just kept doing it) when I store it. I'd actually like to replace the vacuum petcock with a manual one, just for peace of mind.
Can't you just add an inexpensive plastic petcock for a lawn mower or something inline?
Yeah, I just need something with a long enough handle. You can't reach the line with your fingers because of the gap under the tank.
That's true. You'd need to extend the line.

Disconnect and shutoff in 1.
Had the exact same problem with my son's '01 SV650S that had been sitting for 8 years with the previous owner. Turned out that the gas ate up the rubber O-Ring seal in the vacume petcock, causing what was left in there to stick open and push gas into the carbs past the carb float plunger when the gas expanded in the tank. Only vent I could find was overflow hole at top of tank outside of gastank sealing cap. Ended up having to swap out complete vacume petcock with one from another SV650 tank. J&L petcock rebuild kits are available on the internet, but both good & bad results. I'm looking for a 1st Gen SV650 gas tank and vacume petcock, if anyone has an extra one for sale.
i went over to scope it out. i drained the oil and it def stunk of fuel. we went and got more oil and a filter. we had the batt on a charger because he said it was dead. i get everything back together. hit the starter and hear "clink". thats odd. lets pull the plugs. front one is dry. rear one is soaked. hmmmm....."i think im about to get very wet." pull the clutch in, hit the starter and watch .32 gallons of gas geyser out of the rear spark plug hole, ricochet off the bottom of the tank and hit me square in the face. awesome.
i rinse myself off, put the plugs back in and fire it off without issue.
i pulled the cap off and completely disassembled it and cleaned it.
told my buddy if it happens again then we will look at the petcock.

You'll be pulling the petcock and you just wasted 40 bucks on an oil change.
