the last two days have been 35-38 degrees and rain/snow. for the most part, im warm under my gear but my chin is frozen and even starts to hurt a little at the end of my commute. i looked at trying a backalava (sp?) hood thing, but dont know how well it would work. the way my helmet funnels air may be the problem. it pushes air up my face for airflow.
anyone have any tips/tricks?

I use a balaclava (thin polarfleece) Here's a couple options:
1. This Motrax helmet skirt got good reviews for stopping cold wind, and reduces wind noise too boot. Thinking about ordering one myself.
2. Turtle fur offers both balaclava and neck warmers.
PS. here's one other option

Wear a scarf and tuck it into your helmet.
Head sock worth a Ton....thin but keeps the heat in and chin some what warm..

I use a cycling balaclava. In particular the Sugoi MidZero. It has an outer layer of windstop and a thin fleece lining. It works well under the helmet.

well mine's made out of fleece, and it's a pain in the ass to get under my helmet. it's too thick, and shifts over my eyes when i put the helmet on.
do you really need wind protection for 60+ MPH? i dont hear too many cold weather riders going on the highway. mostly just roadroads doing about 40
This little diddy works well in combination with a balaclava:

I have on in my HJC and it works fine.
I use a turtle fur neck warmer, love it!

Have you thought about duct taping some hand-warmer packs around your chin![]()
ya check Sports Authority and see if they have a cold weather Under Armor. i'd heading there soon myself to see if they make gloves to fit under my bike gloves.
i think the ones i got were more for skiing, so they there too thick for a helmet
A balaklava I use one made for skimobiling. Fits under my helmet and tucks into my jacket.
There are also neoprene face masks that fit under helmets too.
cool, seems like the hoods are pretty popular no matter who makes it. guess we'll see what the stores got tonight. too bad i dont have a half helmet or i could just chain smoke cigarettes on my way to work.

I use a fleece neck warmer. I don't know what the official name of it is, I found it at Joe Jones Ski & Sports I think. It doesn't cover my head like a hood, it's literally just a tube of fleece. I tuck it into my jacket and I usually pull it up to just under my eyes.
I get offended by people who cry they've been offended

+1 This is your best bet I think. I don't like the idea of a full-head balaclava...but I have three different neck warmers/neck gaitors, and all work fine up to 60. One's a fleece Turtle Fur, one's a different material Turtle Fur (was about $25 and looks almost like neoprene), and one's a fleece Buell-branded unit. I just kinda hold it up around my face/chin while pulling the helmet on, and/or tuck it up under the helmet once it's on. The chinstrap holds it up over my chin.
IMO, the UA cold gear stuff kinda stucks. I've got the thin coldgear gloves right now, and they haven't been keeping my hands warm in the 40* mornings we've been having down here.
On the cheap, wear a hooded sweatshirt backwards, and tuck the hood up in front of your helmet.
