Finally finished the bike today (or so I thought), rolled it outside to drain the tank and refill with new fuel and was looking forward to firing it up after a looong winter but now it won't start.
Was indoors at decent temps, on a battery tender, replaced the plugs, drained the old fuel, added fuel additive..... Havn't started it since November, and was hoping to ride tomorrow after hearing all the squids roll by bouncing off the rev limiter all day today as we were toiling inside.
The starter sounds strong, but it won't even catch. I checked the fuel valve, and its in the proper position. Even tried following the protocol in the manual for a flooded engine, but no cigar. What am I not thinking of? Bike is a 2000 Yammy R6, carbed. Did I make it mad but putting too many gold shiny bits on? Help!
The upside is that it looks damn good, and I guess I could use it for a coffee table if all else fails although it would be the most expensive piece of furniture I've ever owned...![]()
Ummm I was actually bouncing off the rev limiter because I needed to verify the RPM gauge was in tune with the bike thank you very much

what happens when you push the button? If nothing check tip sensor, kill switch etc.
If it turns over but don't fire spray starter fluid in the intake. If that don't work its spark. If it fires then dies check fuel

Yes, fuel valve is in proper position...
Of me banging my head against the wall?
No tip sensor in my year bike... starter is working... but engine doesn't even catch. Have some starter fluid in my truck, will try but...
I would imagine if it was the carbs it would at least turn over, and try to sart, no?![]()
so it spins the starter, but not the engine? can you bump start the bike (have someone push you and then pop the clutch while in gear)?
If the starter just spins then it could be stripped gears (hopefully on the starter and not the flywheel)
Its hard to describe... but I think what I'm hearing is the starter clicking whe I turn the key... then hit the starter and it sound like it normally would when you start a bike, but the engine never catches... Bump starting is not a possibility. I have a muddy brick backyard off an alley in the middle of Boston... getting it out when not running is near impossible. I don't know how anything would be stripped when it was fine before it sat all winter? Ran perfect when I brought it in for the winter in November, then it just sat...
is it in neutral?
I'd check the pilots in the carbs.

Popped the airbox off.... Greg sprayed started fluid in as I was banned from the bike room due to uncontrollable coughing, and it fired up!
Didn't think you could use starter fluid. Used to use it to start my tractor in Colorado and thought it was invaluable then, but cool
Now fuel light is blinking odd codes at me so need to check into that...
used to use that stuff on my old Monte Carlo every so often and in the buses back when I was in college. The air cleaners on the buses even had a built in receptacle for it. most newer diesels you aren't supposed to use it. so read your owners manual for your truck. although this didn't stop the Ryder mechanic one night when I saw him spray probably half a can into the stupid thing to no avail.

Yeah there is nothing more frustrating than working on a bike all winter just to have it not start. The carbs will be cleaned and jetted but not by me because I have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks everyone especially wishbone you all made our night, time for some wine and pizza!
p.s. Wonder if the neighbors upstairs are wondering why we have a bike running in our spare bedroom?![]()
kickstand up, kickstand sensor?

If it doesn't start there is a reason. Spraying starter fluid into it is forcing it to detonate on starter fluid. Diesels run on detonation, not a spark. That is why you can use starter fluid on them. Do yourself a favor and don't do that again. There's a simple reason why it won't run. Just for clarification:
$
Turns over means exactly that, it turns the engine over when you press the starter, but won't run on its own. Does it start now without the detonation juice? Hopefully you haven't broken anything with it.

Yeah, and doing it indoors is like lighting a grill in your bedroom with a can of gasoline.
