Hey all, wanted to know opinions/experiences with changing gearing on a 6th gen VFR or another bike if youve done it. At the track I am never using up the top end and would not mind a little more low-end grunt. A shop friend suggested going down one tooth in front.
I know this will wear out the chain a bit faster, but I wanted to know if any of you have tried it, if it is a hard mod, and if it will have the desired effect.
Any help is appreciated. The other option is going UP teeth on the back sprocket... not sure if that is better for any reason.
Anyhow.... share/dispense the knowledge!
ps. no philosophical answers like "vfr is not a track bike" or "why do this mod", I just want to learn from those who have tried it... thanks!

Just give it a try... 1 down in front or 2 - 3 up in back, whatever..... not like you can't go back to stock gearing if you don't like it.
I've owned bikes for both the street & track that have been re-geared & stock... Changing the gearing has the same effect on every bike no matter what bike you do it on. Some say you should switch out the rear first, some say otherwise... I say "Semantics".

never took my 6th gen to the track but if i had a re-gear would have helped. loved that bike.
the theory goes that making a chain go around a tighter bend cause it to wear more. thus it is better for the chain life to go up teeth in the back rather than down in the front.
regearing is a pretty good mod be it a GSXR, VFR or NSR

Hey, I'm new here, usually lurk. I figured I'd throw my .02 in here, since it's VFR related. Go for a SuperHawk front sprocket, it is a 15 tooth and it has the rubber cushyness that aftermarket front spockets don't have. I have a
6th gen VFR front sprocket on my 98' as it is a 16 tooth versus my 17. Also did up 2 in the back. I'm lovin' it.
If you just do the front, you probably won't have to do anything else, like a new chain. Just slap it in and adjust tension, which is crazy easy on a VFR.
Lemme know if you have any specific install questions, I'd be glad to help, but it's easy.
Jalopy, welcome to the site. Feel free to introduce yerself in the intro section.![]()
