It boggles my mind that the pickup driver could have hit the Camry that hard. Everyone who lives in Vermont and New Hampshire knows that the roads (especially ones like the Kanc) get clogged with leaf peepers at this time of year.

Notice the emphasis on Vermont and New Hampshire. From what I see in the pictures the Jackass in the Ford is from Massachusetts. I can just imagine that he was taking foliage pictures, and sipping on his Starbucks Mocha Latte, while talking to his wife on the phone. Oh ya I almost forgot the least important thing people do while in thier 3 ton W.M.D's DRIVING.

It is definitely hard to understand what the pickup driver was doing (or not doing) at the time this happened. In this particular stretch, there was moderate traffic in both directions at the time, traveling at speed limit or less since there were a lot of cars turning into and out of this parking area (Camry being one of them).

A couple more pics of the carnage.

I think that stripe on the bumper may have been from my boot. Headlight also smashed by pannier.

I made a phone call and your parts are being put into a box where the cars were taken. My name is on the box - shoot me a message and I'll tell you where they are for ya. Glad to help. Hope you played the lottery yesterday cause you're one lucky bastard. Did you like the "conversation" I had with the old guy in the pickup? He recanted his story a little later after our friendly little chat......

Glad your ok! my husband is the other lincoln officer with the Sprint! He told me all about this last night and how lucky you were...he also told me the conversation they had at the pd about the difference in saddle bags and that having yours come off probably saved you from being spun around - unlike if you were on a harley where they are screwed in...

WATCH OUT FOR LEAF PEEPERS!! Be carefull - especially on the kanc...people in cars are so stupid when the leaves turn colors.

Re: I almost died on the Kanc.

Nikon, thank you very much for making that call about the pannier for me. I already spoke to the dealer about getting the bike repaired. They are going to take it in this week and work with my insurance company. For now, if we can just have the tow yard hold the pannier aside with your info, I will contact you if I need the tow yard's info. It turns out it may not be a problem that I am missing the lock after all - dealer can possibly get it. But it is good to know I could ride up and grab (or have them mail it down) it if it will save some time getting the bike fixed. Also, PM sent.

Cowboyrider, yeah I started to think it was probably fortuitous that the case just popped right off the way it did. I didn't even feel it come off the bike but I did hear it. By the way I said it in the original post but want to say it again, your husband and Nikon are the two coolest dudes on the planet! They were sorting things out like freakin' ninjas. Lincoln is in good hands with those guys.

Re: I almost died on the Kanc.

Glad you're ok and I'm with Nikon...buy a damn lottery ticket. Thats exactly what I said to a friend who was on his ex gixxer 1k rounding a left hander as a Ford Explorer was on coming and rounding it to the right, when said Explorers left front wheel came off and stroked the bike head on. Luckily it didn't bounce up.

I know exactly where this happened on the Kanc and I'm having trouble understanding how he managed to do that, regardless of traffic. Hope the people in the Camry end up ok...and yea, Ranger guy was doing 3-5 mph tops.

For some perspective, I drive in and out of Boston every day for work. Generally the sketchiest, most aggressive asshole drivers I encounter have NH plates. Morons are morons.

Unfortunately there are crappy drivers everywhere.
There are also good drivers (like all of us) that make just one seemingly small mistake once in a while and it just happens to be at the wrong time. That's when it's called an accident.

Kudos on controlling your bike to the side of the car's bumper.
And props to Triumph for designing break away hard panniers.

Headed eastbound the camry was stopped waiting for an opening in traffic to turn into the Lincoln Woods trailhead parking lot, right over the bridge. The guy in the ranger wasn't looking and drilled the camry that was stopped, in essence - parked in the road. There is no where to bail from there, other than into the woods, which would have been better anyway but he didn't even have enough time to turn at all. I think he looked up pretty much on impact. Nothing he could do....well other than pay attention in the first place.

I'm glad your OK - I'm not to fond of "touristy" places in season - if I have to go to these places I take my time & or ride in a group. Those panniers are huge - hanging off the sides. Any panniers I only use for rallies or camping.

+1 None of us was there so it's hard to judge what happened. First reaction for me was to think "this guy must have been driving wicked fast to not have enough time to brake coming upon the Camry"....on the other end...the Camry might have been going wicked slow, doing some leaves peeping...going around a corner and then the guy in the pick-up truck might have been coming just a bit faster and..boom....

Good thing everyone (hopefully) got out of this relatively OK...that's a bad rear ending accident...ouch.

Not quite. As I came around the bend, going the same direction the cars were, you cross a bridge then there was the pull off that the Camry was trying to turn into. It's a good 800 feet from the corner to that turn off.
Either the truck driver wasn't paying attention, or he was hauling ass!
