The glaring oversights aside, personally I wouldn't go through the pain of dismounting anything unless a tube is pinched or otherwise unable to hold air.

Get the beadlocks straightened out and inspect what you can while the tubes are deflated. You'll have the rest of your answer on the beads when the tires are due for replacement. At least that's the way I see it.

Also, while I understand the nature of this thread and that you're rightfully upset, I really hope you contacted him in advance of posting.

I'm not making excuses for anything but as someone who has done work for forum members many times over...sometimes shit happens.

You don't always know everything in every situation. Even the professions don't. When stuff goes wrong while working on stuff that isn't yours it's not a great feeling.

However...when shit has gone wrong be honest about it. I broke a coworkers TPMS sensor on his truck when changing tires for him. He ended up not really caring about it but I didn't charge him for the job. You get the idea.

I hear you and if the guy is indeed a shitbag, sure, air it out. That said, I really don't see any indication there was questionable intent and it appears (at least to me) that someone tried to help and ended up making a mistake or 4. I'd have handled it privately first then acknowledged it in public once the situation has been discussed.

This thread was made out of anger and I don't think it's the way to go, especially since a newish member is at least making an attempt to offer meaningful discussion during their time here.


In a past life I made 4 mistakes in a row by installing the pistons backwards in the engine of my racebike. That slip up cost me about ~$800 to undo in addition to the time to tear it all down again. It wasn't my first engine rebuild but I still managed to make the simplest of errors along the way.

This situation here is a few overlooked bead locks and so 30 minutes total to fix. Not entirely sure it's worth it to put up a shred thread over it but again, that's the way I see it. To each their own.

Sucks but at least it should be an easy fix as long as the tire and tube aren't damaged. Maybe he isn't familiar with dirty tires? To me it looks like tightened down the rim lock and then set the bead. His other mistake was not checking his work.

I'm dreading the day I need to take my wheels to get new tires either from price gouging, damaged wheels and brake discs or just flat out doing it wrong to the point I've been thinking about getting my own machine. I've seen "pros" fuck it up. At least with them if you catch it, it's a 30 sec fix with their fancy machines. I just need some space to put it.

My buddy and I went halfsies on a No-Mar machine with the low profile clamps. Makes tire changes a <10 min job. There is still a little finesse required that we had to learn over the first few changes, but it makes changing tires a breeze. We can do a full set of tubeless tires in 15 min.

I've also seen the fancy Coates machines for right around $1000. Those take up quite a bit more room and are not easily moved, though.

I agree, however, it has been a few decades, I have changed plenty of tires.
I used to hate it when someone came in with other than steel wheels. Newer tire machines make it much easier.

You need to check your homeowner's insurance policy on that one. Mine does NOT cover anything like that. If someone loses a finger and you are not covered .. the lawyer's bill in 4 minute increments.

I have a commercial policy(s) that covers my barn & activities, which probably has the same exclusions, injury release is easy though.

I would think the proper course of action would be bringing it to his attention and letting him fix it or showing him what he did wrong, publicly shaming another forum member for trying to do us a favor seems kinda low.
additionally, that's an easy mistake if you're not familiar with dirt wheels and rim locks. The first time I tried to do my own dirt tires with spoons I messed it up royally.
I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt and still plan on using Purp's services for my street bikes and whatnot.

It's called Google. I found YouTube videos that explained how to change tires with rim locks to make sure I got it right the first time I did dirty tires....

That’s an interesting perspective. I trust very few people to wrench on my bikes - it’s my ass on the line if something fails. My vote is learn to do it yourself correctly, or find a professional.

This particular case of dirt tires seems like a 50/50 to be honest.
